• Husqvarna Motorcycles Made In Sweden - About 1988 and older

  • Hi everyone,

As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Thanks for your patience and support!

1982 430 xc repack silencer

Fearthepack

Husqvarna
AA Class
New Bike to me. How do you repack the silencer on this bike? I see the 3 screws at end removed them took out the cap and spring out but innards won't budge. So what more disassembly is required?

Nice call Dewy didn't know about that site. Took a look can't see anything more that would be holding the internal baffle. Guess I will take the silencer off and tap from other end to see if it will budge.

If it is like the silencer in the picture of the thread on Silencer Identification, Once the 3 screws are out, just gently knock off the cap. Try using a piece of hardwood and a mallet to avoid damage - but do it evenly as the fit is quite tight. The parts all just slot together... Give the baffle tube (perforated) a good wire brushing and re-pack with loose glass wool. Use the proper stuff from a m/c shop - not roof insulation for best results.
Hope this helps!

Andy it is the same. Everything is apart, all old material around the baffle has been removed, but baffle wont budge. I can grab it with long handle needle nose pliers brace against rear tire and pull like hell with no reward. Have sprayed carb cleaner and wd40 inside still no luck. Don't expect rust inside a 2 stroke exhaust everthing looks coated with oil.

I use the silencer from a 430 on one of my 250 four strokes. The end cap on mine is held on with two springs. Once the end cap is off, there is a perforated spark arrestor, a spring and a plate. The wadding can be hooked out with a piece of wire.
The perforated tube down the centre is welded in place at the front end and is not removable. I found a clean with a 1" dia wire bottle brush got 98% of the crud off.

If it is the same - all Alloy construction as per in my pic, it should just pull out. Maybe someone has siliconed it in to prevent the baffle tube rattling. Even so, I think it should pull out!

Don't wreck it on my say-so though, because I will feel bad if you do!

Andy.

Grouty you are right. I found out the hard way. I tried a 12 ton press to push it out from top end no luck. It looked to me like prev. owner must have installed the baffle from the top and pushed it down to the inner flange to give enough room to slide on the exhaust pipe, thats why it wont budge. Every bike i've had the baffle was removable. So didnt want to ruin the silencer so I cut through the weld holding the top open cap end and removed it with the baffle still attached. Set silencer a side (safe from destruction). Placed the top cap into the press a proceeded to press baffle out. Because it was welded in (Didn't know at time) it took a lot of pressure but the press won. You can imagine the top cap could not retain its original shap. But some relief cuts around the rim some hammering and bending the top cap fits and is ready to be welded back on. Now I will modify the baffle so it can be removed and reinstalled with new packing each time it needs servicing. I WIN the end.:applause:

Posted in another topic that I am trying to repack my '82 250WR silencer. So...I guess the baffle does NOT pull out?
