  • Hi everyone,

As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Thanks for your patience and support!

1982 250WR...for vintage motocross?

AA Class
Greetings;

I have just sold my '82 125 WR...it was a neat little bike, but we have finally gotten vintage mx going in my area and it just wasn't suited for that. And at 185 lbs., I think I was a bit much for it to move around as well!

So...how would an '82 250WR work for mx? Is the gearing so low that it would be more angst for me? Suspension? Would a different pipe help out? Other mods that might help out?

I'm just an Intermediate class rider, if that makes a difference. Thanks.

Kent,
I've MX'd XC / OR models which have the same length travel as there MX/CR brothers in the past &
found there gearing was NOT suitable for the MX starts. The XC models use the WR lower gears &
1st is too tall & 2nd too low, so your either wheeling over backwards in 1st or flat out bogging using
2nd to start with, out of the starting gate.
So what I would do is, the hell with the gate jump, I'd be last out of the gate & just use the taller
gearing to get more speed & brake later into 1st turn, usually netted me a upper mid pack start.

Now using the WR also has lower suspension, so unless your vertically challenged , would mean
your give up 1.5 inches of travel , which may not sound like much but it is.

Now if you not super serious a WR would work fine & but you'd probably work harder they you would on a CR.

I can pull a hare scrambles, dead engine start, holeshot on my '82 250WR. Done live engine starts for grass track moto at Qualifier type events and been right there 1st or 2nd gear. That lever on the left, helps you lay down the power. I haven't done any "real" vintage MX with it, but wouldn't be afraid. It would be nice to pass MX guys, on a bike with lights and a plate.

My 84 250wr has cr porting, air cooled. I figure to try the 13t front sprocket with a 55t rear sprocket first. I have a 14t front sprocket to play with too. You can go with the 14t sprocket and go to a smaller rear tire. It's a trade off till you find what works for you. Maybe a 15t sprocket with a 120/80 tire.

Do you race NETRA here in the northeast?

As for your 250WR, it will work just fine. Gear the bike so you can easily do a MX start in 2nd, you will rarely use 1st, and since you have a 6 speed transmission you will also rarely run out of top end, most of the time you will only use 2nd, 3rd, 4th and sometimes 5th.

I have used my 78 390WR for motocross a few years ago. 2nd gear starts are fine as Kartwheel said. I have never got into 6th as that would be 60mph plus.
Run with it as it is to start with. Once you get a feel for what the gearing needs then change the sprockets.
Just go out there and have some fun. I don't win, but my chops ache with the grin ! (wow ... that rhymes !)

Okay...it sounds like it might be fast enough for me. Regarding the suspension: I'm assuming shocks AND forks are slightly shorter than its CR brethren, hence less travel?

Yes, both are 10.6" travel, but the rear just has an internal spacer, if you remove the spacer the shock becomes the same length as a CR/XC. The CR/XC length shock on the WR swing arm gives you 11" of travel.

The WR suspension is absolutely fine for vintage motocross. Unless you are super fast and expect to win every race the WR will be perfectly fine. I race mine almost exclusively in VMX ..lights and all! Certainly don't feature near the front I must admit however......

The forks have a shorter damper rod. I also race an '82 430WR, totally stock with the lights and all, the only mod is I have removed the spacer from the rear shocks. This not only gets you a bit more travel, but more importantly it raises the rear end and improves turning significantly.

I live in the Atlanta area. That was at Diamond Don's National in Jefferson Texas, but I race all over the country.
