• Husqvarna Motorcycles Made In Sweden - About 1988 and older

  • Hi everyone,

As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Thanks for your patience and support!

1980 CR 390 40mm fork conversion

cognitive 390

Husqvarna
AA Class
Trying to convert a 1980 CR 390 to 40mm forks. Installed 40mm triple clamps and forks with 81 (longer) axle. However, I seem to have a gap (roughly 1") between brake housing and same side fork. Also, lower fork clamp is not allowing the front brake arm to function properly. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Hi Cognitive, steel spacer sleeve in front brake backing plate should be right up against inside of fork leg, install 81 axle so that larger diameter is in the right side lower leg, axle nut on brake side.Tubular spacer sleeve goes inside left leg.On the right side, there is a spacer with a floating sleeve that presses into the hub over the top of the bearing,to take up the space, some of them have 2 roll pins to spin the odometer drive.Avoid the type that have thinwall tubing as a spacer, unless you are using the odometer drive, the tubing splits on the seam when the axle is tightened.I will try to post pics.Nice lookin 390 you've got!!

Thanks Dave, the hub does have the spacer you show. When I push the brake side against the fork leg, the leg clamp won't allow the brake lever to function properly. The wheel rim (tire) will also become uneven between the fork legs. When I center the tire between the fork legs I have some free play on both sides of the axle. The brake lever will function properly though. I am going to measure those gaps and have spacers cut (using another spacer sleeve) to not only get the tire centered but allow the brake lever to function properly. I may need to bend (or bushing) the brake arm support. If you could send me a picture of both sides of your hub/fork leg that would be greatly appreciated. I may be missing something here. Wouldn't be the first! Thanks.

The 40mm forks use a different axle setup in comparison. I have a front wheel that was used on an 83 250CR and it has a much different axle It has a long barrel section that the left leg clamps onto and the end of that barrel spaces the wheel from the left.

Here are a few photos of mine,Im using a DLS front brake, which is a few mm "taller"husky front 001.jpghusky front 002.jpg than the single cam backing plate.

It looks like If my sleeve mods don't work I may need to try a later hub set up. 81-83? I am using the 80 hub. Really appreciate the pics!

I think the 78-82 single cam hubs/backing plates are all the same.Maybe somebody with an 81 or 82 with 40mm forks can check and see what they have for spacers, etc.Ive got an 82 XC front axle,10.062"long,the larger OD on the T-bar end is 2.580" long,if that helps
