• Husqvarna Motorcycles Made In Sweden - About 1988 and older

  • Hi everyone,

As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Thanks for your patience and support!

1979 390 OR igniton timing

crazy russian

Husqvarna
I have a 390 OR that I'm restoring. The bike starts and runs reasonably well, but I thought it would have a bit more power than it does. It has good compression and it's jetting is fine.

Anyway, I want to check and see if the ignition timing is correct, but the Motoplat flywheel on this bike looks a lot different than the one in the manual. I have the original manual along with the OR supplement sheet. Maybe the flywheel for the OR is different than the CR?? Anyway, I can understand the setting of the CR, but the OR setup has me confused. I''ll post pics of the flywheel if it helps.

Ignition for OR:

Motoplat 139 mm dia.

Ignition advance ---

2.18 mm before TDC measured at piston
21.8 mm before TDC measured at flywheel (this is the same measurement people have posted for the CR, so I would assume the flywheels are actually the same ... but mine doesn't match the pic in the manual)

It also lists a lighting coil 15 watts and 35 watts. The OR didnt come with lights, but the connections are there.

Ok...I have the pic of the flywheel near TDC. Upon further investigation (while it's a bit different than the one in the manual), the wire rod goes in the hole near the bottom. I'll need to remove the cylinder head to get iTDC accurate - the screwdriver through the spark plug hole is close, but not close enough. It apears to be advanced only about 9 degrees, but I'll know for sure when I check more closely later.

OR should have an external rotor ignition esp. were it has a lighting coil. It should use the pin through the rotor to the stator for the timing mark.

The smaller external flywheel [116 diameter] is normally used on 250's, so your larger 139mm should be correct for your 390. your illustration in the manual is probably the smaller 116mm flywheel.
