    As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

    When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

    Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

    Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

    Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

I recently came into possession of a 1979 Sweden built Husqvarna 250 WR. The plan right now is to restore it and register it so I can rip around town and take it with me on off road trips in case the Jeep breaks or I just feel like riding it!

I am brand new to motorcycles and any pre-EFI ignition systems in general so this will be a fun learning experience.

What I know:
  • 1979 Husqvarna 250 WR (based on frame/engine numbers)
What previous owner & original owner have stated:
  • Engine is blueprinted
  • Automotive coil installed for better spark (?)
  • has been sitting for many years
  • Gearing has been changed to lower the ratio (more torque)
  • Bike was used for competition at one point, and was rebuilt very shortly before being forgotten in a canvas/tarp material garage.

Next to the 79 Honda Z50r. Grew up with the 50 on loan from my uncle and very ready to move up in the world!

Took the seat and tank off!

The wiring definitely looks like a mess, but I am sure it worked well when it worked!

When I try to kick it over I do not have spark so there is definitely something wrong with the ignition system.

I am leaning towards ripping everything out and going with an electronic ignition system such as HPI or vape - any input is very much appreciated!.

I hope you like my very *smart* temporary fuel tank - I know the pun is painful...

I also finally found another use for my transmission jack that has been sitting around for quite a while!

I noticed that with my temporary fuel tank the gas will flow straight through the carb, out a tube on the side and down onto the skid plate.

Does this indicate something is wrong or just clogged in the carb?
 
Yep, gotta pull and clean the carb. Sounds like the float is stuck. Pull the right cover off the ignition and have a look, probably looks shitty in there too! Get a flywheel puller, you will no doubt need it! Good start. When you take a sideways pic with your cell click the rotation button. Good luck. Chris
 
I was able to free up the engine today and now it spins with the kicker! waiting on a new Mikuni VM34 so I can take my time with rebuilding the old one. Also ordered a new MC coil to see about fixing the spark issue. A puller is on the way to get some measurements for an HPI ignition system.

38mm would be correct, or even a 36 maybe. 34 is small for 250
 
The frame and serial number indicates it is a very late 1976 250WR. At frame number 16,000 the 77 production started. The high serial number indicates it is probably the original motor to that frame.

Looks like a 77 pipe, so it maybe one of the last 76's built.

76 Brochure says 36MM Bing, but Husky changed things, depending on what they had. Bings had a tickler, to prime the carb, so NO Choke, so it could be stuck open, that's why it's just flows out the float bowl.
Nothing wrong with the original Carb (Bing), and parts are still available.

Does anyone know where to get a full 76 exhaust - the expansion chamber (terminology?) is pretty dented and the rear silencer is broken off - I am going to try to re weld the rear and hammer out the dents but id like to price out some nice upgraded or just factory pipes.

@ruwfo - there is definitely a Mikuni on it at the moment, but again plenty was changed on this bike from the factory so who knows!
