1977 360 auto

Hi everyone. I bought a 1977 360 auto. My first automatic bike. It looks pretty complete and rough! Just the way I can afford them!. I also bought another 360 auto motor that rotates in hopes of putting it in my 73 360rt frame. Now I will put that motor in this auto frame to get some trail riding in this summer or until I finish the 500xc. What puller fits this flywheel? I bought a 76 auto manual, will that suffice for a 77 rebuild? Are these shocks correct for the year? I am selling a few bikes to get funding for a vintage car I'm looking to buy. Selling the 1972 Husqvarna 450wr/6speed, also the 72 450cr/6speed matching cases serial #0008. And my 2002 Honda xr650r with very low hrs. No titles, I can get them titled but it will take a while. The manual will be fine, it looks like a week in a can of diesel fuel might be a good start!!

You will need to hold the first gear clutch to be able to undo the nut.
I made this simple holding tool ....

You will need a 32mm socket and a 24" strong arm

When the nut is undone ......
You will need to adapt a puller similar to the picture below. Mine was a cheapy from ebay. I had to machine the slots in, much closer to the centre.

Make sure the three M6 bolts go through BOTH parts of the central hub.

Thanks for the advice guys. The piston is frozen so no special tool needed. That nut came off real easy and I used a 3 jaw puller to pull the clutch housing. It came off easily too. I did not see any holes in the clutch housing for those 6mm bolts to go into either. When this motor is finished I'll need those tools. I'm thinking I'll need to pull the other motor apart to replace the seals and check out the transmission. So I'll need those tools. Ha! Thanks grouty. New gaskets as well. Alas there is no free lunch! What are the threads for the fly wheel puller? I've got to get one to finish the disassembly of the motor. And a bigger bucket of diesel. Thanks stormer254. Pulled the motor from the frame after work today and will take the frame to storage .The blue paint on everything is latex too. Looks like I have 5 husky motors to finish, hell looks like I'm in dartyppyt' garage! Minus the wicked bikes!

That's who I got my masher from. This says it's good for sem/motoplat into the 80s. I should look around a bit more since I took the 83 500xc apart I must have one that will work... I hope. Or I can just buy it and have one for the auto. Thanks for the info. I can't do much until the thing is in a million pieces and spread across the room!

Bolt pattern looks very similar to a steering wheel/harmonic balancer puller.

So I found my puller in the 500xc flywheel! Some cash I can use elsewhere. The wheel pulled easy, even with all the corrosion. Time to put it all in the bucket. Thanks for all the help. I'll keep you posted.

So I got the crusty trans apart and it's grim. We'll see how the hard parts clean up. The springs are NFG. I sent an email to the Chinese place Michel found in 2014, we'll see if that pans out. Every bearing need to be replaced, Oh the Humanity!! Looks like every metal surface is going to need a Massage. This may very well be a worthy opponent for my down and dirty methods. Good thing I'm a masochist!! On the plus side these autos seem to be easy to disassemble. This is on the back Burner For Now. Moving on to the 500. I'll resurrect that thread when I get the bearings, seals and gasket. They are On The Way!

Have you heard of using Molasses to remove rust?

All the small parts in this pic were treated with a molasses solution, brake drums, u-bolts,

coupling, etc.

I have used it with all sorts of parts,

You must measure everything out properly though.

The ratio is 10 to 1.

Here is a chrome rim that I soaked in the solution for 3 days, the clean patch is where I rubbed the rust off with my finger.


Start with 10 liters of hot water, mix in 1 liter of molasses, the hot water helps to dissolve the molasses.

I get mine from a Fodder store, they give it to horses.

If the mixture does not cover the parts don't add more water! it must always be at the 10 to 1 ratio.

After 3 days I remove the parts and hose off with water to remove the crud, place back in the solution for another 3 days then

hose again, keep repeating.

It works and it's cheap!

You can even put starter motors and generators in the solution it will not harm the windings if they are in good condition.

If the solution stops working, mix up a fresh batch, every time you remove the parts after 3 days

and hose them off you should see a difference.

It is best to keep the molasses solution covered, so a bucket with a lid is a good idea, any

bacteria that gets in will breed.

I'll second the molasses. A lid is a good idea as it smell worse than me after a night on Bass (English real ale !)

Thanks for the ideas. I have an electrolysis set up that I've use with great success. I have tackled some of the worst POS on the planet with it and have won! I'll blast the hard parts with walnut shells and polish them with 0000 steel wool. This is the 4th gear wheel insert, is that crunched up thing in there supposed to be there? I don't see it in the parts list. Also, all these pics are from my new pixel 2 phone. It takes great pics but they are as big as 6mb large. I took a crap load of pics before I found I could choose a smaller size. So these are very hard to upload as this server has a hard time shrinking them or whatever it does. Future pics should be ok. That's why on or two pics per post. On the plus side the piston is 82.42mm so there is some life left in the bore.
