  • Hi everyone,

As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Thanks for your patience and support!

1972 WR250 the beginning

Nice pile of the remains of a 1972 WR250 Husky for $200. PO had built 2 out of a pile parts and passed the remains to me. 3 tanks! (the late model is for sale! ). The cylinder is bad (is there a liner or replacement one out there?) Missing the Fesma Flyweel, carb, rear wheel, seat, etc., etc., Good project for 2024****************************************

Wow, I got 4 cylinder studs removed today! On former projects this has been a huge struggle. Now to get the cases vaper blasted : )

Nothing exciting to report ... still derusting & cleaning parts. Was excited to see that the pegs were Webco aftermarkets : ). May have found a 5 speed splined gearbox shaft !

My impression of your original post was to sell some parts you acquired but I see I was wrong. Your two recent posts look like you're looking to restore your pile of parts.

I've seen reference on here to having these old cylinders re-sleeved with custom a made sleeve. I think LA Sleeve was one place mentioned. Do some searching on here.

The Webco after market pegs sound cool, and the 5 spd spline shaft will make it easier to find sprockets. Unfortunately non of the tanks pictured are for the WR. Thats not to say they won't fit, just won't look stock.

Heres a place for parts. Possibly even a cylinder if you ask Jef.

Thx Crash. Going w/ the smaller tank, but had hoped the other was original : (

Struggled to get the bearing off the crank arm, but finally got it!

Wow, the crank counter weights look a bit pitted, rust maybe? Hope the big end bearing is okay. Should be alright for a putt putt bike. The ignition stub shaft seal surface looks very good, can't see enough of the primary stub to tell its seal surface condition, rest of it looks pretty good too.

Keep the pics coming.

No real progress to report, but I have been gathering some bits for it. I have a nice pair of black leg forks (originals have badly pitted chrome), ordered some DC plastic rear fenders for it, first cleaning of the small metal tank, and refinished some of the smaller pieces. Project came w/ a 400 front wheel that I need to restore. Hoping to make better progress later this month (famous last words : )

Some progress! Found a better set of fork tubes so they should be assembled shortly. Still gathering many missing bits :banghead:

Well, I cheated and found a complete '72 CR 250 engine. It's together (yeah!) with cylinder. Piston and bore need a redo (hopefully just +1 over). Yesterday I tried to remove the countershaft sprocket nut with absolutely no luck. Might just be leaving it in place ....

Has anyone seen this before: a slot "channel" at each cylinder stud? Guessing it was someone's idea of cooling?

I'd say its to allow trapped water to drain. Rusted cylinder studs is a huge problem with these bikes. I don't see the slots as a problem.

However, the base gasket area at the top of photo looks like someone took a hammer to it. Permatex makes an RTV thats oil resistant, its called Ultra Black. Theres also a fuel resistant gasket dressing called Permashield but its really not ideal for filling deep gouges like silicone.

"However, the base gasket area at the top of photo looks like someone took a hammer to it. "

I know, very suspicious about all the hammer marks. Not sure what would have caused someone to beat on it like that, maybe trying to remove the cylinder? Hope I can get a good enough seal there...

Found a 2nd over NOS piston on ebay : ). Unfortunately, Vintco is out of stock on their early +1 / +2 250 pistons (too much pent up demand?). Think I'll pass on the ebay airbell that's being listed for $450 . Found a seat base which naturally needs some repairs. Moving forward at a turtle's pace...

So are you going to just clean up the hammered cylinder base. I would try to spin it on a lathe and flatten that out reasonably. Might have to add a base gasket so the piston ain't pokin' out. Or is this the new bought engine?
Unless you plan to race it that should last a good long time.
Great Luck!

The hammered cylinder base is the one from the "new" engine. Original cylinder not only has a chipped liner but also metal rot in the exhaust port. Good idea on the extra gasket. I was also going to use Crash's recommendation of trying to fill in some of the dents w/ Permatex goop. I wish I had a lathe big enough to do that Chris! I just have a little hobby lathe (Atlas 618). Maybe when I take the cylinder for boring I can see if the machine shop can do that for me.

I'm sure they will for a up charge.
I have a couple lathes for TinkerBitching. (Thanks ROB)
A 12" Clausing and a 6" South Bend.
But with my skills I would have someone more knowledgeable do it too!!
