  • Hi everyone,

As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Thanks for your patience and support!

11' TE449 Battery

My battery is toast. What are the best replacement options? Stock? Or is there anything out there better/cheaper?

Better, yeah. Cheaper? not so much if you opt for a lithium battery. I took a Shoira Lithium battery from my ATK and have been running on my TE 449 for almost a year (2 years total). Works awesome, never has needed charging. about $110.00.
Oh yeah it weighs next to nothing.

The battery is the only thing that has failed on my bike, after 6 months. the bike is now 12 months old now. They must just throw in the cheapest battery they can get!!! even though its made in Japan! When I rang the husky dealer they said they are not covered under warranty, which I found abit useless. They should cover the whole bike and stand behind the product they sell. No doubt that would increase consumer confidence. When you buy a new battery for your car they are often covered by a 12 month - 2 year replacement. I'm not sure why they cant do the same for the one the bike comes with.

I don't know where you live but if you can find a Batteries Plus store, the batteries they sell are guaranteed for two years. I bought one for my Harley and it lasted over three years. I'm sure they make one to fit the Husky.

Not only are they fractional in weight, but it is where the weight is, up high. Dropping four pounds of weight up that high feels like more than it really is.

I feel lithium batteries are the way to go. The technology has really caught up.
Unless of course your butt is sitting in a 787 Dreamliner!

The key to Li battery safety and longevity is keeping the cells balanced. Some people have mentioned that they are lousy at first in the cold. I guess you need to create enough draw to wake them up.

Had a $100 gift card for Amazon from Christmas, so I took the plunge and bought a Shorai. Supposed to arrive early next week. Will write up my thoughts when I get a chance to try it out.

I did not know the air liner problems were lithium related! Maybe that is a bit much to ask of them? When I first got a Shoira battery 2 years ago there were plenty of stories of them catching fire and melting your bike to the ground!
I have an observation of when they are cold, I have had absolutely no problems when cold. Of course my FI 449 has been my best cold starting bike ever. Also sometimes when it is hesitant to start just the act of it cranking over warms it internally then it spins the starter pretty good!

I think you will love the battery. If Husky would of used these as stock batteries we could of had a bigger fuel tank. You will see what I mean when you get it and use most of the spacers to fill in where the old one took up all that space!

Surprise. My battery arrived last evening. It's very small and incredibly light. The box it came in is mostly full of foam to fill in the stock battery space. I'm going to install this morning and test. The irony in the whole thing? It's raining all weekend in sunny Phoenix, AZ, so a ride might have to wait.
