    As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

    When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

    Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

    Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

    Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

'09 TE 450 - About to purchase, help pls

Hi everyone,

New tot he world of Husky, and i'm about to purchase a s/hand '09 TE450.
It has a broken kick starter shaft (i believe this is some what common?)
Spoken to mechanic that has replaced a dozen of them at local Husky dealer.

I have come from a back ground of KTM's, YZ's, XR's in 4-strokes.
This will be my first Fuel Injected dirt bike.

I have Googled and searched the net to become informed on what i am buying, didn't find too much. A few guys had cam issues and strange engine parts breaking.

Anything i should know about? Hot Start, Cold Start, Starter motor issues?
Fuel range?
Any heads ups greatly appreciated.... Then hopefully and can contribute instead and asking :)

As long as the oil is changed regularly the motors are practically bullet proof. Search for olderhuskyrider on here, his 2010 is approaching 20000 miles!
Kick start housing is somewhat fragile but the electric button never fails for me so maybe yours has a battery issue?
They only have a 9 liter tank so range is around 70 miles or 100 Kms, some have an issue where the pump moves on it's mounting and cuts the range substaially. There are lots of fixes for that on here, yours is probably fixed anyhow.
Never had a starting issue with mine hot or cold, usually starts on the button within 2-3 seconds. There is a cold start pullout on the throttle body but I've never had to use it.
Can't think of anymore right now but I'm sure others will contribute......

Yes, he broke the kick starter shaft, where it goes into the casing (apparently common from what i have been told?)
Around $320 for the part and $300 to install i was quoted by the seller, $700 for the part and $300 fitted i was quoted by a Husky Dealer.

I am from Oz, have done a bit of reading and a lot of people stating they only get around 75K's from a tank... then another chap mentioned that after some mapping, he gets 150 to 160k's? which seem an amazing difference, sounds way to lean to me.

Anyway, i have agreed to buy it, will pick it this afternoon.
Comes with a Motard Kit, 6 new oil filters, 2 spare air filters, 4 rear sprockets, and all the Motard gear, extra chain, plastic, etc.
Its done 2400k's, if you ever believe that ;)

Appreciate the help... When i get it, i'll go through it fanatically like i always do.

75Km/tank is about right, that's what I got from mine.

Broken kick shaft? I never used mine... why bother when its lecy start.

mine had only done 1400Km before some arsewipe knicked out of my garage.

Only problems I had with mine was, moisture in the speedo cluster, leaky forks (common issue), and I kept falling off the bastard as I have short legs.

If the forks have not been touched, get them re-valved etc as in stock form they are crap and way to soft. Had mine done, and the bike was a more controllable beast.
 
yes, the suspension has been re-sprung and valved for a 105Kg rider, which is exactly what i am.
So hopefully its ok.

Leaky forks... don't say that, i have YZ250F and a VTR1000 both with blown fork seals currently!
Last thing i need is another bike that eats forks seals :(
 
That's a lot of kit you got there for it ! :)
Can't remember what I got from my te510 so can't help.
I do remember replacing a reg rectifier and Decomp love on mine as you couldn't kick it cold or hot (maybe the initial issue here ) they were $65 from R+D husky.

Easy to do, didn't need to remove the cam or anything.
Ps, hitting water too hard on them sees water go down the spark plug hole and they stall.(just in case you do it and wonder wtf has happened ! :)

Like the sunken recess where they plug is? Wow, never heard of anything like that before.
I know the YZ250F's could stall on a river crossing, but a good handful of rev's and using the clutch as a throttle prevented it.

Do they have a Manual De-Comp? Or is it all auto?

EDIT: Ok just Googled it, wow, such a simple oversight by Husky! Water around the plug.
Unbelievable... You have to wonder what Post Production testing is done.
We do a few river crossing too....

Well a certainly appreciate the heads up, it would have had me stumped in the bush.

Manual De-comp. Small finger operated lever on the left hand bar.

50mm Mozzi's renown for leaking seals. Many have tried various fixes such as special seals and other things, but they still leak to a degree.

Never had water in through the spark plug hole on mine. Heard plenty of stories of people drowning their bikes though, mainly due to water/moisture getting into the electrical connectors. not so much water in through the spark plug hole. On mine, It ad a little hole at the base where the plug seats, I thought that was to drain the water out of that area if it did get a little wet there.

Ok.
Lever is a hot start. Leans motor.
Hole under plug is a water drain funnily enough.
Air compressor down plug hole and blow it clear.
45 zokes leak.
No 50mm on that bike.
 
Had 50's on mine mate. Even the manual says so :p

And... The engine does have a auto de-comp, as well as the Manual de-comp lever on the left bar :p Refer to page 23 of the manual.
 
I did hear that some did have some part of the decomp gear or something fitted incorrectly by the factory, and well, should have been replaced under warranty, but were done only if you complained.
 
Yes, the replacement shaft comes with a Bulletin from Husky and there is something about filling or a part that has been reshaped, so the local Husky mechanic tells me.
