  • Hi everyone,

As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Thanks for your patience and support!

08 te450 questions

I've searched this a few ways and haven't come across a great deal of info. I'm looking at a 08 te450 dual sport. I plan to trail ride and use the bike for the occasional commute to work about 12 miles each way. I'm not familiar with the brand to much. The bike has 3700 miles power up pack arrow exhaust and a Scott's stabilizer. The seller is asking $4k.

Is that a fair price? Also are there any maintenance pitfalls to look out for? I'm looking at this and a klr650. I'm leaning towards the te450 due to the much lighter weight and what I assume will be a significant offload improvement. I'm not a Hard core offroader mostly just riding for fun. Any opinions would be welcome.

$4k seems rather pricey to me, although the engine is the big block Italian motor that I really like.

If you are not a hard core off roader and mostly ride for fun, the Husky may be overkill for you, the transmission on that bike can be set-up to be a good commuter or a good off-roader, but not both, you would have to pick one and learn to ride it as geared.

Anything I need to watch out for? Telltale signs of problems or common issues with that year? I can't seem to find much about the bike on various forums.

You might do some research on Ebay etc and see what similar bikes have been selling for recently. Currently with the clearance sale going on prices are low. I would think closer to 3K.
If you are thinking about off road at all the KLR is the wrong bike and the CR trans in the TE really limits it's road worthiness. If you want a bike for exploring gravel/dirt roads, ride to work and grab groceries the KLR is the winner.
The farthest I have ridden my TE450 on the pavement is 30 miles and didn't enjoy it, but off road there is no comparison to the KLR.
Both bikes are good for what they were built for. A better bike for you might be a DR650 which is a little closer to a dirt bike, but better suited for the tarmac than the TE Just sayin-

Oh also what would be a good price? I was thinking $3500.
Are you in Australia Shane? If so than $$3500-4000 is probably on the mark, less according to condition. Have a look on "bike point" (Aussie website like trading post but just for bikes) for prices of other bikes of the same make.
Otherwise I don't know the market value outside of here.

No, I'm in the US, specifically East Texas. I did some research around here and the market seems to be a bit of a bubble in my area for the bikes. There aren't a lot of them, and the ones i find are right in the $3500 to $4000 range. the bike is also cleaner than the KLRs I found and has less miles on it giving it the edge. I'm going to look at it Saturday and will likely buy it if all works out. I plan on doing frequent off-roading and the thing about the KLR that has me worried is the weight. i dont want to have to hike out of some riding area in the 115 degree heat in the Texas summer because i dropped the KLR and can't pick the pig up alone. the TE450 is much lighter as you guys know.

I'm also rather in love with the style of the bike and the fact that it's not something you see everyday. Hoards of dual sport riders in east texas, all you see are klr, klx, wr, CRF, and XRs. i just hope it's not a maintenance queen, it doesn't seem to be from the info i can find. im mostly worried about valve adjustments and such, no husky dealers in my area, only in Dallas with is a couple hours from me.
