  • Hi everyone,

As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Thanks for your patience and support!

'07 Sm450r Carb Stalls Out

Acidean

Hi Guys,

I've spent the better half of the day searching for something similar, but either I don't know the forum layout well enough yet, or it just isn't here :)

I recently acquired a de-restricted '07 SM450R (my first husky and SM). It is a '07 model, but first registration was 2010 and it only had 240km on the clock (about 150miles). The bike is AWESOME and I can't stay off it... there is however one problem that I'm experiencing.

While riding everything is fine, until I stop that is. When stopping at a traffic light, stop street, etc, the engine keeps running. Idles fine, sounds fine, no issues at all, regardless of whether I'm in 1st or neutral. The moment the light goes green and you touch the accelerator it just stalls out, and then it struggles to start again (making you look like a real idiot)

I've been riding on and off for about 20 years, so clutch control isn't a problem (the dealer asked me this and pretends I'm an idiot, he even told me I was riding with the fuel tap closed... DUH!!!)

Has anyone had something like this before? Could it be that the carb is dirty or not set properly?

Any advise would be appreciated.

Oh, another thing... the dealers over here are crazy with their service costs (approx R1000/$140 excluding parts)... are these bikes difficult to maintain?

So it runs great everywhere accept off idle with load.

Being that you just got the bike- I would start by going through the carb- not to make adjustments at this time. BUt to Clean and Inspect, to include inspection of the AP Circuit (accelerator pump). There's alot of information out there on the FCR Carb- I'd be supprised if theres not a bunch in the EFI/Carb section. This will also give you a chance to ensure the carb/intake boots are in good shape- verify there's no cracks or leaks.

Let me guess... the problem is worse on warmer days or when you have been riding a while and the engine is hot..

It is possible that you have a blank Leak Jet, or the wrong size leak jet (55 to 70 works best for me)... or the pilot circuit (pilot jet & fuel screw combined) is too rich.

I'll assume you know what I am referring to, but for the sake of completeness:

Hey guys, thanks for the prompt responses, greatly appreciated.

Coffee... you are spot on the money... just when you get in the groove of things, adrenaline flowing, blood boiling and wham... have a lemon.

I'll review your suggestions and post back asap :)

In the meantime, just use the hot start a bit. On my bike it will stay '1/2' out.

I am lazy :)

Hey guys,

So since I don't have the time or the parts available at the moment, I went and just upped the idling speed of the bike and it's running fine for now... it was idling between 1400 and 1550 from the dealer... idling between 1750 and 1900 now and it's had no issues at all.

What do these bikes usually idle at?

1750-1900 should be fine for a carbed bike
EFI bikes like 1800-2000

At 1400-1550 you were low enough for the Auto Decompression mechagnism to engage- thus the stall outs. Problem should be solved. Have fun...

Mine consistently idles around 2000rpm. Seems to like it best there. The 530 idles happily at around 1600. These bikes need the carb to be set up properly. Just as an idea; 175 main, 45 pilot with 2 1/2 turns on screw (cheapy thumbscrew), and needle in 3rd from top. It's a bit of a bugger to kick start when cold, but when hot, just pull out red knob and go.

Make sure you take into account elevation. Those who are posting jet sizes used are what they found to work at their elevation.

My 2006 TE250 idles about 1750 and 1850, will not run consistently below 1700..

That's why I stated as "just an idea".
Google my area, it's around 2400ft, temps around 75'F, humidity 45% - average summer day this year.
But, ya - best performance is to get jetting done professionally.

I just wasnt sure if the O.P. knew that

Thanx guys, you've been a great help...

p.s. I'm studying development and joined a dev forum a while back... they were not even NEARLY as friendly and helpful as you guys... :applause:
