  • Hi everyone,

    As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

    When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

    Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

    Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

    Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

06 Smr510 Valve

Hey guys new member here!
Just picked up an 06 smr510 with around 10k miles. Oil and coolant flush was just done before buying it by a dealer. The bike started right up with no hesitation, pulled hard, felt very healthy.
Road it about 500 miles mostly all backroad riding. Was going to do an oil change after this weekend. Anyways I rode up to the mountains (to grass valley from walnut grove) about 60 miles there. Took the freeway up going about 70mph and getting it on here and there.
Got up to grass valley to my sisters house, rode the bike around the property on a mini dirt track just messing around while drinking some beer. (Lmao probably not relevant but I’ve heard dirt getting in can fuck the valves).
Ended up leaving and rode probably about 30-40 miles back into Sacramento. Got on the gas a little in sixth gear to make a lane change and suddenly my rear wheel locked up (there was no prior knocking, ticking, no bad noise at all) I grabbed a handful of clutch and coasted over to the shoulder luckily without falling or getting hit.
Bike wouldn’t start and I figured the bottom end blew. The engine was siezed but was able to rock the bike backwards with it in 1st gear to unlock the motor. Trailered it home and tore into the motor.
The bottom end is perfect. No metal in the oil. But one of the exhaust valves and piston slammed into each other. I dont think the valve dropped because the stem is still being held by the keeper. I’m assuming it jumped timing? Do any of you guys know measurement for timing chain? And any ideas what would have caused this?? Thanks for any help guys! Also do you guys think this cylinder is reusable or needs to be replaced?

Oh man! The cylinder looks toast. Consider yourself lucky. My timing chain/tensioner went at exactly 10,00 miles too snapping the intake valve and the cam yoke as well. Had to get a new head off eBay cuz the yokes aren’t sold separately. Came with valves fro $450 though so not too bad, lol. I would do cylinder/connecting rod and piston< new timing chain. 96 link for the 510! Maybe they can reserve it or get the 530 kit! :)

I have the same bike, year too. Love it AAND I used to live in Grass Valley! I blew mine up on HYW 20 and UREN st exit! LOL! :) In FLA now. Check cam bearings! I had to have new ones pressed. I also had the new con rod pressed in and the head gone over. ZipTye did all the work. The manual actually recommends replacing the timing chain every 10,000 kilometers! Man, They are NOT JOKING!!! I also put a manual timing chain tensioner in. I DO NOT TRUST THE STOCK ONE ANYMORE!!! I think that was the culprit IMO? Don’t skimp! Even if the corned looks/feels straight, REPLACE! They are great bikes but HIGH MAINTAINANCE!

Head looks kinda mangled too. I would send em both in to ZipTye and have him look it over. Be prepared, those titanium valves are $200 a piece!
 
When I rebuilt my 250, only the exhaust cam was available anyway, so no choice but to get new bearings pressed on, including removing a refitting the gear. A cam specialist here in the UK did mine. Fortunately I only needed exhaust valves ' the inlets are even more money.

Hey sorry I just rechecked this thread!! Didn’t realize anyone responded to it. The cylinder is the least of the damage. Not sure if it can be repaired or not. I would hope so I don’t have to buy a new/used one. The cylinder head and piston took most the damage. And you’re probably right about the timing chain giving out because like I said the valve stem is still being held by the keeper in the spring so it didn’t drop it. Timing must’ve jumped and and fed the valve to piston face lmao. I actually just bought a used head off eBay that’s looks to be in good enough condition to do a very conservative rebuild. My only questions are WHERE THE HELL DO I BUY PARTS??? I’ve heard I can buy from halls but I was curious if they actually have stock in the US or do they get shipped from Europe to halls them to the buyer?? Also what size piston do I buy? I keep seeing 96.96 and 97??? Lmao this bike makes me wanna rip my hair out a bit. It’s unfortunate husky produced such a great bike but the aftermarket just never caught onto it. I plan to do the head, piston, timing chain, timing chain guide and tensioner, and maaaaybe a cylinder repair or a replacement.
