• Hi everyone,

As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Thanks for your patience and support!

Power up mod with stock exhaust okay?

dualie

Husqvarna
AA Class
Did the power up mod this past winter. Thing is, I haven't been able to work a Leo V slip on into my budget yet. Bike is running cooler and seems to have a bit more midrange torque. Nonetheless, I'm wondering if I'm doing anything wrong by running the bike with the stock exhaust?

Not just a question of weight (although the weight loss is dramatic). The Leo and the Arrows flow a lot better.

No doubt... can't wait to do it, but just can't justify the coin right now. Meantime I'm wondering if I'm doing anything wrong by running it with the power up mod and stock pipe. Read online somewhere that you shouldn't do the PU mod without the slip on. So I'm wondering if that's true or what the implications are, if any, in running with the PU and stock can?

PU + stock cans is fine.

That's the feedback I'd gotten and what I did...all was fine...bike ran well. In hindsight it's interesting though... With stock cans and p/u done I couldn't get past 28-32 mpg. Now granted I ride it pretty hard, but still that's way too low. Still, the bike ran perfectly fine so I didn't sweat it too much. Then, about a month ago, I put the FMF Powercore 4 on it and every tank since I've gotten 38-41 mpg. So my exp tells me the p/u w/ stock pipes works well enough for the interim, but both together bring the mix closer together to get better mileage.

Check out my dyno thread. My stock bike w/ PU was still very lean (especially at WOT). The power commander made it run right. I'd for sure recommend some kind of programmer before exhaust. My mpg has been 52-54 w/ PU and after adding PC-V. I don't ride real hard though.

PU and stock cans, gutted and de-cat'd. Works really well. Dropped about 5lbs off and they are cool to the touch. Costs you a grand to drop another 10lbs. That's some expensive pipe-work. ;)

Cost me about $25 and a couple of hours of my time.

Another easy 5-7lbs can be dropped with a Shorai batt. Leaves about $800 for skid, bags, gear, whatever.

Besides, I like the twin cans, and the gun-sight end caps. And they are really heavy duty, nicely made pieces. Seems a shame to just trash them.

Plus, I'm a cheap bastid.

As has been mentioned here previously, the p/u and freer flowing pipes would need a jd kit to regulate the new air/exhaust/fuel relationship.

Mine runs perfectly with dual Leo, airbox maze out, and the p/u kit in.
Not too lean at all, but I do live at 6,000 ft and ride mostly from 6k - 13k.

Altitude does make a big difference. I'm at about 1000 feet or so. When I rode to CO and got up into the mountains, my idle speed dropped way down. I had to turn it back up. MPG also went WAY up. I was getting 50 or so MPG at those altitudes. Here, I'm lucky if I get 38.

My 630 runs great wth pu kit, maze removed and stock exhaust converted to flow through. Running @ sea level, throttle response is crisp and plug color is good. Thought I would need a JD tuner after mods but see no need for it now. Ran with dual flow throughs for a while and then decided to convert to single exhaust. No difference in power or noise but the 13 lb weight saving makes a noticable difference during tight going.

I too use the PU with stock can.Better than before but the bike craves for open exhaust.Im curious about the spark plug colour after using the PU for about 1000 km now.last time i checked it was with the O2 sensor connected and the thing was running very lean.Thats why i installed the PU kit to be honest,to make the bike run cooler and richer, and not to gain more HP but im sure that with the Leo can the bike will gain torgue throught out the whole rpm range...

+1

If you look at the settings reported from the majority of the tuners, they end up pretty close to the stock map.

I think the stock map goes a bit lean at the top end. Mine tapers off pretty good above 6g's - should really pull all the way to redline. Which is what, btw? 7500, 8000? Otherwise it starts and runs great, no stumbles, no surging, great power.
