Riding the coal mining regions of central PA.

The entrance to "Big Lick" coal mine tunnel, Williamstown, PA.

Overlooking the valley next to a pile of Anthracite coal refuse.

    Mountain of Anthracite refuse.

The mountain put in a larger perspective. Hillclimbing on Anthracite is an experience like none other.

A pit of Anthracite dust. Like quicksand, but black. Like flypaper, but stickier. Fun!

Coal as far as the eye can see.

All that coal seems a little creepy to a Californian, who isn't used to seeing coal. Looks like a black desert.

What's even more creepy is the reality that the coal in the pictures started to accumulate in the late 1800's, and stopped accumulating (to the levels you see) in the mid 1950's! The "coal" in the pictures is actually refuse coal that was discarded in the old days because it wasn't the highest quality. Back in those days, they simply threw away "inferior" coal and allowed it to stack up on piles like those in the pics. Some of that coal has been lying around for over 100 years. I rode on those coal banks 35 years ago! They haven't changed except for some erosion and the ruts cut into them by 40+ years of riding. The mines in that area shut down in the mid 50's.
