  • Hi everyone,

As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Thanks for your patience and support!

Neutral issues.

My 310 has a problem shifting to neutral when the motor is at temp. When the motor is cold it's fine but once up to temp and the bike is stationary the pressure required to release 1st up or 2nd down makes it impossible to get neutral. the rest of the shifts are fine and if the bike is moving its fine. any ideas as to the culprit.?????? Oil changed within every 10 engine hrs with high qua

my 450 has a similar issue, motor running, 0 mph, clutch in 1st gear, cant get into neutral. if Im rolling at around 1-2 mph tho it will.
clutch is properly bled and has plenty of fluid, slave isnt leaking.

looking to address this problem this winter.

Please let me know what you find. Don't really want to split the cases when I may not be able to see anything wrong.

My 08 TXC250 is like this ... I was thinking the clutches are dragging enough to cause this issue but not sure ....

My 450 is that way. has been since new. Have a rekluse if that matters. Did it before and since the rekluse.

Yep. My 08 TE250 is the same. Can't find neutral. I put in an EFM autoclutch. Now I don't even try to find neutral anymore.

glad Im not the only one.
this winter I have a STM slipper clutch going in, and at Billf's advice Im gonna inspect the shift drum plate while its apart.
really want to sort that issue as its kinda a pain dealing with sometimes at the start line.

mines a 2T with similar problem, if im stopped at idle i cant get neutral, i have to blip the throttle and do it, i think its due to the draggy clutch.

My bike has this same issue. But mine started after I put a Adige slipper in. I just deal with it because the shit you can get away with when you have a slipper in is a life saver.:D I would like to see what you find out also MXRider.

I just got my adige slipper in the mail, I didnt know about them when I posted this as I had plans for the STM. In the next few weeks I will be putting my bike back together and I will report my finding for sure.

right now its in a million pieces as the frame is at the powder coater, and Im too lazy to venture out in the garage and tear down the motor now

Sweet, you will be really happy with this upgrade. It's super easy to install also. Once you have a slipper you won't go back. Lets you get away with little mistakes and gives you even more trust to brake later. The hard part for me was not fethering the clutch like you would with out one. Brake hard and jam the shifter down and wait for the slide to begin. It's just one less thing to think about.

OK I finally got around to investigating my neutral problem. Some of you guys were spot on the problem with mine was the plate that holds the shift ratchet mechanism in. This is only made from mild steel and there is no hardening, I found that mine had burred over from up shifting and also down shifting 2x spots. So once it was out I filed it smooth with a finishing file and re assembled. Tested it out today and was able to easily select neutral every time.
One very happy camper

Awesome! Billf told me about it a while ago, and I just never got around to it. Now that I have to pull the clutch it looks like I will be able to find neutral. My 09 450 has never been able to do that

Thanks for the update! Well it looks like I'm going to have to check this out as mine has the exact same issue. Is the part hard to get to for a novice mechanic (me)?

AWESOME FIND! If I'm understanding what he's saying it looks like you can pull the right side engine cover and get to the part. Not sure if it's the gear shifter shaft or the retaining plate. It may be obvious once you get in there...

Here's a pic of both. Can someone point out where we need to be looking?

Mine just started to get hard to find neutral just this year. I guess I'll have to take a peek and see if that plate has become burred.

Can sombody draw an arrow to the plate that developed the burrs? I have the same issue on my 05 TE450 and am not very adept at repairs. Learning as I go. Thanks.

so I pulled the right hand engine cover today. I expected to look at the shift shaft or the retaining plate and see an obvious burr. Not only did everything look okay, but I was able to shift with my hand just fine, easily clicking neutral ever time.:excuseme: I am generally better able to do it without the bike running... which leads me to wonder if my rekluse isn't to blame (although when I have the bike running and pull in the clutch lever, it isn't any easier to find neutral). In addition, a little throttle helps to click it into neutral (i.e. I catch neutral every time I go from first to second when I am really on the gas.... love that neutral rev to the moon ).

Oh... so I forgot to take the shiftlever off, and therefore was not able to remove the shift shaft from the motor. that also means I could not remove the retaining plate. Is the burr on the hidden side of that plate? (I didn't want to drain the oil, so I just had the bike laying on its side.
