If anyone does manage to add a key to a 2012 model let us know how it's done.

Would a 2011 switch fit? Any signifigant mods to the harness seem unlikely. Still can't figure out what genius decided that was worth the weight savings...I'd be scared shitless to walk away from my bike for more than a minute. I love that I can ride over the mountains and stop at one of my favorite on road bike stops, pull the key, and cool off for a few with a cool refreshment and snack.

Husqvarna removed the key ignition switches from its 2012 TE line due to a communication signal error in the computer, odometer, and ignition loop.

I have found no differences between the '11-12 harnesses, but according to the Husqvarna tech I consulted; the ignition key can only be installed on a 2012 TE as a starter and ignition disconnect, but must be manually wired into the harness due to the 2011-2012 harnesses being completely different.

I ordered an ignition from Husqvarna for my '12 te511, it comes as one kit with the ignition and the lock ring. The stock ignition cost me $65 and will go in the original mount. I won't be doing the install, Malcolm's said they could do it in 30 min and I was all for that. I will keep you posted on how it comes out. :)

What is the part number for the ignition you bought? Keep us updated on how this works out.

My ignition switch is on back order from Italy, but I was promised the switch in another week. Careful inspection of the wiring harness showed both 2011 and 2012 being identical on the official parts lists. I asked a friend at Husqvarna to confirm my suspensions and unfortunately the two harnesses are different. This has now been confirmed by the regional technical specialist for Husky USA.

When your switch does come in let us know how much trouble they have installing it. It would be great if their 30 minute estimation is correct. It would be even better if you could let us know exactly how they do it :D. Keep us posted and thanks for the info.

The ignition came with two keys, the ignition cylinder, lock ring and steering lock to match. The install was done by Malcolm Smith Motorsports and the technicians name was Wayne Martin. Essentially he used the blue and red-striped white wire and added the lock function to the kill switch under the front head light. He used all new plugs instead of splicing, but either way would work in the end. The ignition locks were $65 plus $55 for the install.

I installed the neck lock today. Pretty easy, just pull the cover door pin straight out. I used a pair of gripper pliers and remove the door. Push your key in, turn to the left and pull the entire mechanism straight out. The new lock goes in the same way, turning to the left and push it straight in. There is a new door and pin that just gets tapped in. :)

    Tinken,

Great post! My part is on order, however the owner at my local shop is wary of the procedures of the install. I have a couple of questions if you dont mind.

    1. Is the ignition installed as a stock keyed kill switch? If so are the wires that go to the fuel system not hooked up?

    2. What where the "the blue and red-striped white wire" hooked up to?

I printed and showed the owner of my local shop this thread and he optimistic and stoked of this possible solution as he is missing sales because the 449/511 do not have a key ignition.

My ignition switch is nothing more than a keyed kill switch. Tracing the wires down from the throttle assembly is your best bet. Cutting power to the starter would also be nice.

I think it is a good idea to add a clip to your key ring and attach it to neighboring cables by the ignition.

Just an update on the wiring harnesses for the 449/511's. The 2011 and 2012 electrical harnesses are exactly identical. If your 2012 449/511 was built without a key switch installed, the electrical harness that was factory installed on your motorcycle is a 2013 harness. Apparently when Husqvarna is near end of year production of their motorcycles and they run out of a particular part, rather than making more, they use parts from the next year's model. Graphics and chain guide aside, I wonder what else they changed in 2013.

I was able to track down how the stock ignition is wired. The blue and red-striped white wire from the ignition switch is used. You will have to track the cable from the starter/kill button into the area under the front number plate. The two wires from the ignition switch are connected to the two blue wires, one solid and one with a black stripe. Connect one on one blue wire and one on the other. That's it, simple. Enjoy.

I have a 2012 TE511 and I am trying to add a keyed ignition. I traced the wires coming out of the ignition/kill switches on the bike and it has 4 wires. they are solid brown, solid green, solid blue, and blue with black stripe. If I order the 8000 A8900 Complete lock assembly, how many wires does it have, what color are they, and what do they attach to? Sorry if this is redundant but from reading your posts I still do not understand. I do not have two solid blue wires so is my harness different? Thanks for any help you can offer. Also, where is everyone ordering their husky oem parts from? I can't find anywhere that sells oem parts.

I am guessing that on your harness, one of the solid blue wires is your blue/black combo. I don't remember how many come from the igniton, perhaps you can look it up on a parts pdf. I have armored my cable so it is not easy to get to. I would just clip an ohm meter across the leads and turn the key.

When I bought my 2012 TE511 right before Xmas, Bill's Motorcycle Plus installed a Husky ignition switch for me. I didn't ask them to go to the trouble of matching the keys to the fork lock.
