Got a spare muffler and decatted it. Was fairly EZ, drill the rivets take out the front of the pipe and use a Sawzall, grinder, and a lot of searing and it is off. :D In use does not get louder, is WAY cooler running and seems to have gained some roll on and top end power. Need to get a real ride in. Put the SA back in and it is nice and quiet. The muffler is still on the heavy side though.

I drilled holes in it to see how deep it was...

Works great and is quiet. There is no real packing in the muffler and should never need work / rebuilding. It is a three chamber affair inside.

BTW super EZ to take off the pipe. Three bolts and it is in your hand.

Rode it yesterday... WOW Went into "race map II" mode on it's own (it knows what i am up to) and gained bark off the bottom and afterburners on top. It is super quiet and deceiving but the corners come up REALLY fast. Still runs smooth and perfect just faster. LOVE this bike.

any change in your MPG with the hot cat out?

That cat looks identical to the ones found in Yamaha personal watercraft. At times they will fail and the center contents of the cat is expelled out the pipe.

Good move! That cat looks really restrictive, more so than the SMR one. Can't help but think removing them is the only way to go as after fitting the power up, mine were choking up black after 800 miles.

Mine had a much tighter grid / holes. it made a good difference in power thats for sure. EFI saw it and changed maps for me. COOL

Do you think you will get a dyno run to check the air/fuel? It's something I'm thinking about but the gutted cans are much as the aftermarket Arrows so the race map should be pretty good [IMG]

Old thread from the past, getting ready to do mine now, why didnt you just cut the inarrds out as opposed to cutting the pipe?

    1. Would grinding away the weld bead shown in the second photo allow removal of the catalyst without cutting?
    2. If you have not put it together already, please take a photo of the muffler section.
    Nice work.

Feel free to get it out anyway that looks EZ to you. That last pic is the view down the inside of the muffler. It is a weird mutli chambered muffler with no real packing.

Good God, that mesh must be made of Kryptonite, you aint drilling that out! BTW mine is plugging up, Ive got about 400 miles on the bike. Kellys looks like it was lean at the time, mine is nice and black thanks to JD. :applause:

Kelly, there is no EZ way, your too nice. Its a PITA and Im an aircraft mechanic with a box full of sheetmetal tools. Best way I think is to get that flange bent out of the way so you can see the welds in the back, the flange (small one, welded to cat) is only there as a deterent to us monkeys removing the cat, its very effective but not unbeatable. The sawzall is probably the best bet from the uncovered backside.

4" fiber saw was my best solution. Worked well. It just killed the sawzall blades i had like nothing.
