Does it harm the drive train not to have a chainguide? Currently mine's a 05TE so there's a small chain "hanger" instead of a guide.

Would it be okay to remove the chain "hanger" and install this?

The chain guide is there to make sure that the chain isn't derailed in brush and rocks. It isn't as important for pavement riding. I don't recall any of my street bikes having a lower chain guide on them.
