Sorry for the long delay, Its a Rotax 500 with electric start in a modded 79 frame, what looks like an air filter is the oil tank.

I need some advice with a 78 390 AMX that's dropping out of drive, the main shaft and gear are new, so its not that.
It seems to drop out of drive when its in a higher gear, is that the free wheels ?

Isn't it the gear that engage the other gear on the axle when you engage the D what is worn ?

the 390 has a cable that releases the gear and its pushed on to the shaft buy a spring, I am happy that this is correct and working. Before I replaced the shaft and gear it would jump out of drive
as soon as you opened the throttle and it made a noise. now it will drive until its in a higher gear then suddenly no drive.

You will need to take it to pieces again, it is probably a freewheel(sprag clutch) given up, how fast when you loose drive?

I have had it all apart again and reassembled it and it now seems ok, one thing I will change is the gearbox sprocket, mine has a 14 T and I noticed in
all the parts books it came with a 12T

I don't know if any of you Auto pilots have done something like this before but I made up this fixture to re groove the clutch shoes
then screw cut them on a 3mm pitch. the outer holes are tapped 5/16" and are 4 degrees Clockwise (not CCW) to the inner 1/4" tapped holes . IMG_4058.jpg IMG_4060.jpg

The Hot Trod is a fair trek for me too (in the SW). But it's well worth it. Awesome weekend last year. The Auto behaved itself too.
