My shifter shaft has quite a bit of play in it. Is there a replaceable bushing in the case perhaps? Also, the shifter has up and down play before it engages the spring. Essentially, I can move the shifter up about 1/4 inch before I feel the pressure of the spring to return it when in neutral Same thing moving shifter down. My newer bikes have spring pressure in neutral right away.....no play. Is this normal?

there is no replaceable bushing, you basically have to get a case to fix that issue. a machine shop could fix im sure, long as they could fix it reasonably. as for the spring tension, are you familiar with the shifter design? there is a spring you can replace, its located under the sidecover once its removed. in case you dont know, do not pull the shifter or kicker off when removing sidecase, leave them on. it will become obvious why once its off.
does the bike shift ok? there could be something else worn inside if there is a ton of miles but generally the husky is fairly stout aside from the kicker.

The bike shifts fine. You aren't talking about the spring that the pin in the side case splits, correct? The other long spring with hooks?

THE FIRST PLACE TO START LOOKING IS THE COOL LITTLE LINKAGE THAT YOU WILL FIND IN THE COVER THE SHAFT THAT THE SHIFTER IS ON IS NOT THE SHAFT THAT MOVES THING AROUND IN THERE

yes the spring that the pin splits is all that really provides the tension you feel at the lever. the other smaller, long spring just helps with the claw get a bite on the shift drum.

Here's what the above posters are describing. But if you have excessive play where the shifter lever shaft goes through the outer case cover, you'll need a new cover.

If the play is in the case rick at huskyoutlet.com has a fix for both shifter and kick starter shaft case play. I believe the cost is about $120.00 for both but I would call rick and determine the cost and if its cheaper and better than a used case. He is a little hard to get a hold of but always calls back within 24 hrs. He has done some work for my 1981 cr 430 and it has been quality work but can take about 2 week turn around time

all primary kick bikes use no linkage in the cover. shift shaft in cover keys directly onto shifter claw-rail-thing

#30 is the shifter shaft through the outer case cover, as noted by SilverstreakNZ above, it slots onto the inner shift shaft/ lever in picture I posted above (#28 in this picture).
