    Hey guys,

I have a 1978 390 Auto. I've been looking all over the internet for the declutching wire but can't seem to find it. #17 on the diagram. Any help would be much appreciated! Thanks in advance.

It is only a cable , you could make your own or adapt another cable.
    ESPECIALLY AT $50!!

The earlier auto bikes had a cable to engage and disengage the transmission and also one that appears to be a brake for the first gear clutch drum. I have no 390 auto bikes, the 420 has neither but a spot for where the drum brake would go blocked off and by the 430/500 neither. Which one is called declutching?

My 390 Auto is a 1978. I have the "drive engagement" lever on the right handle bar. The cable is short, and just long enough to reach here. My theory here is that I have to use my right hand to operate the lever, so I am not tempted to touch the throttle. I have a new longer cable that will locate the lever on the left side of the bars.
I contacted Venhill Cables here in the UK, but they were unable to replicate the double drilled brass gearbox end of the cable. I think the new longer one came off ebay somewhere, but I can't remember where !
Making a new cable would not be difficult if you buy the outer and inner parts commercially then make the other parts to suit.

Thank you very much every one of you for the responses. DeathfromAbove - I'm going to go ahead and purchase one from Halls. I considered making one of my own, but I believe grouty pointed out a strong detail. The lever being on the right side might encourage you from touching the throttle while engaging the bike in drive.

'Declutching handle' and 'drive engagement lever' are one in the same. Perhaps a different name given to them in the US and the UK. #19 on the first photo I posted in this thread is what we are referring to.

Just call first and talk to Bob? In Parts. He'll let you know if it will work out. The pn I gave and the one in your list is not the same 01G/02. I have my lever on the left because the cable fits that side better, also fills that side that's missing the clutch lever. I rode mine for the first time yesterday and it will take some practice to not rev while shifting into gear and at about 29 seconds in you can see my left foot reach to shift it into first. LOL

If your cable sits well on the right hand side, you would be better off filling the left side with a rear brake.
Mine has this and the standard foot brake. Makes it so much easier and safer to ride.
