2013 Txc250 Starter Operating But Not Engaging Flywheel??

Was able to fix the starter motor by taking it apart and cleaning it and adjusting the brushes. However, when hooked back up and pressing the starter button, it just spins without engaging the flywheel.

Question: Any thoughts as to what part(s) need replaced to engage the flywheel? See attached pic. The circled gear from starter shaft and sprocket gear behind flywheel works well and spins when starter is engaged. Just not cranking the flywheel??

I would suggest inspecting your sprag clutch (#41)

When you put the starter back together there are lines on the barrel (with magnets) that need to be aligned with Marks on the end caps. Get this wrong and you starter turns backwards. The good news is you just tested your sprag clutch and it obviously works.

Out of curiosity; how do you conclude from the topic starters information that the sprag clutch is working?

By rotating the motor with the kickstarter it is easy to see the engines rotation direction and to determine whether the starter motor is rotating in the correct direction or not.
- In case the starter turns backwards the sprag clutch will simply not engage.
- In case the starter turns in the correct direction, the sprag clutch itself is still a suspect imo.
