  • Hi everyone,

As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Thanks for your patience and support!

2012 TE 250 Race Map

Arrived today, now if it was above freezing in my work shop I would be all set. :)

John - I'm looking forward to your feedback on this upgrade. I have read a few others that have been positive however I want to be sure the $400 is well spent. I'd also like a feel for the time it took to upgrade the injector / ECU. Lastly did you have to have your TPS reset?

John, you need a propane heater! just make sure there is good ventilation in the garage / workshop. I swear by my injector/ecu.. you will love the difference it makes... and make sure the TPS is reset. I had my dealer do it last year and it was about an hour job for him. Best money spent on this bike was that upgrade for sure. I love my bike now. Good luck and let us know.

I feel your pain about the cold weather... our snow is still making things unridable in my area at the moment and the public trails that are free of snow don't open till May 1st..... bring on the melt....****************************************!

Most of the parts are installed. The only thing left is the metal tank elbow. I'm going to need something to put the FULL tank of gas in LOL Poor planning I guess.
It went much easier than I thought, I had to remove the muffler anyway so I just took out the top two subframe bolts and loosened the bottom ones. Easy access to the screws on the fuel rail, they came right out with an extension on my impact driver, quick whack and they were loose. I will admit it would help to have really small hands. About 2 hours into the job so far but would be faster the next time.
I'll finish it up tomorrow and take it for a test ride...stay tuned

I had gas in my tank when I swapped out the elbow. It attaches to the pump, and while you will get a little fuel leaking out, unless the system is pressurized there should not be much. You might have to plug your vent line to keep it from leaking when you turn the tank over, however.

Tom,
WOW! do it, spend the money! It's like a totally different bike. I haven't had the TPS reset as I'm waiting to take it out for a long ride, but that said it is 100 times better than it was stock. You can tell that it running richer and the engine response is instant, front wheel comes right up. I would be perfectly happy if this is the best it can be. I'll do more research before I think about having the TPS reset.
I had a container with about a gallon of two stroke mix that I emptied out to store my gas while I replaced the tank elbow. There must have been just a little bit left of the old mix when I refilled my tank. Nothing like the smell of Castrol in the air :D

Do reset TPS.

It's the equivalent of establishing TDC, the base for all the better information in this Race ECU to work to the max. If the TPS is off it will give too little or too much advance etc.

ETA this is not to say when you have the TPS reset that it will be a different number. As times goes by it tends to stay the same or nearly so. There's that possibility it's the same.

Expect a higher idle, maybe 2000-2200 ....commonly reported after this upgrade.

I did about 25 miles of single track yesterday, the bike does everything it should have done when new. My idle was a bit high but it adjusted it down slightly. Instant throttle response at any speed, I did try Race Map ll and could not see too much of a difference, either setting is MUCH better than original stock.
I am now waiting for my Motoz Tractionator tires, I was told they are on a boat coming from Australia and should be here in a few weeks.

I'm being a little bit lazy asking this instead of reading the old posts to try to find the answer: Do you need to change/upgrade the exhaust on a 2012 TE250 when swapping the injector and ECU? I think I've seen people recommending this on the '10 & '11 250s but am not sure that it's necessary on the '12s.

If the '12 250 is like the '12 310, the answer is no. It's got a pretty good Leo Vince exhaust on it from the factory.

Good to hear the bike is working great for you now John. Glad you took the advise. Apparently the MotoZ tractionators are on back order until end of May up here in ontario. A friend had an extra back tire in his garage so I'm putting it on this week. It's a 120, 90, 18 and very beefy. My friend said that this tire will feel taller than My Kenda track masters, hopefully by not to much. We'll see how it does this weekend

That's the size I ordered. I think with the stock 140 you could almost ride on top of water. LOL

The 2012 already has a Leo Vance system on it. I did remove the converter though.

I got Kenda KT270's front and rear tires on my 2010 te250 and love them. 800 miles of mix , easy riding and hardly any wear.. Hard to beat $45-60 for rear tire. Grips are fine on and off , though I'm not in any sand dunes. Just Northeast USA, mountainous type riding

I don't mind the Kenda Trackmasters on the back but the front is not the best. The tread is not consistent and doesn't bite as well as other's. Have not tried the Kenda KT270's. I've got a Non-DOT Michelin Cross competition on it now and it's amazing. Front end bites like mad. My boyfriend has one on his 450 and a lot of the knobs are busted and he still loves it. Hope the Cops don't stop us and see the motorcross tires on the front LOL. I'm Interested in trying out the tractionator this weekend. I'll give a report of how I feel about it.

Put it on last night.. For some reason these tires are difficult to get the bead to pop.. And it's definitely a beefy tire I feel like I sit an inch taller now, after replacing my worn out Kenda.

Cage fixed and throttle stop removed when I got the bike, I change the 40 tooth sprocket to a 53 . I'll remove the converter when I install the rest of the stuff.

I currently have a a 13/50 tooth sprocket on my 2012 TE250 and would like to gear it down a little more for trails. Do you like the 53 tooth setup and do you think that alone would make a difference (3 teeth more in the rear sprocket) or should I also get a 12 tooth front sprocket. I do not ride on the road very much. Thanks. Harold

I don't have any problem with single track now at all. It is just a bit low for me on the road but I manage, will still do 45 to 50 MPH easily.Three on the back is just about the same as one on the front. If you can get a twelve tooth countershaft sprocket it would be cheaper.
The injector and CPU made the biggest difference.
