Saw a video on Youtube [ can't find it now ] of a tough cage fighting type guy starting a 85/86 Wr/Cr500.
It kicks back [ so fast that if you don't know what to look for you'd miss it ] he pretends it hasn't broken his foot , then he kicks it again and it kicks back again , this time he can't hide it and he gives up.
These things kickback so fast there's no way to stop it hurting you.
Get your timing right or a little retarded.

    Found it.

Yep, I know ! I had that with my 430 WR back in about 1989. Spent a few hours in A&E. Good news was that I hadn't broken anything, bad news was I had ripped the ligaments in my left foot. Yes, I was stupid enough back then to sit on it to start it ! If it kicks back, it WILL hurt. Either your body or your wallet.

any thing over two fitty demands respect at the kickstarter. get of on the lhs and turn the bars away. always use a big boot on your foot.

Went to look at a 500 AJS when I was a kid.
Seller thought it was funny to leave it on full advance.
[ Advance lever on handlebar ]
Never kicked like a 400 Husky tho.

haha thanks guys. yes i know all about the kick back on this bike. i have started it atleast once a year since i was in high school. i quickly learned to always wear a heavy duty boot. i use a milk crate on the left and kick it with my right foot. and i pull my foot up quick or make it fall off after each kick. however since i changed the timing it hasnt kicked back as much. still not full power though. can anybody recommend a good, reasonably priced TDC indicator that will measure so i can go to the books spec of (off memory) 1.5mm before tdc?

ya. im thinking about this one. 14mm thread (as my research shows is what a br8es spark plug is). which is what i believe im using by the way... not sure i ever mentioned that. it would be cool if it were the wrong one (easy fix).

looks like that one will do the job...one with a longer shaft will work on ac and lc too..maybe a better investment..heres a pic of mine with the holder..

can some one confirm or point me to how to correctly time a SEM ignition please?
ive seen the pin in the above post but my SEM doesn't seem to have a hole in the flywheel or stator plate for it to locate into ?
im currently using the DTI method then adjusting the stator plate to give 15 deg on the pointer cast into the flywheel window.
does that sound correct, bike starts fine & rides well.
ive put a timing light on the ignition but its got me confused, light indicates its firing 45 deg atdc at just above idle speed.
the timing cant be that retarded as it rides so well !
got me scratching my head anyway ha ha !!!

    bike is an 87 400lc

trying to figure out what i plan to set timing to (we decided 15-17 degrees), but as far as stroke length before tdc....

there are no 2T 1984 manuals for some reason. and the 1983 manual is missing the timing pages.

this is from an 86-88 manual. it says 2.3mm before tdc. it says that this 2.3 mm is 18 degrees. so im thinking to get 15-17 degrees, i should be around 2mm?

lastly, this is a wr400 technical data sheet from a 1975-1981 manual. it says 3.61 before tdc, and says that is 22 degrees.

hey ol mate, there is a specific 84 - 86 250 - 400 water cooled manual, you are looking at the old 400 "cross" aircooled steve mQueen models. the later bikes have a mikuni, not a boing carb. keep searching, its in there...

ill keep searching, but that Bing 54 carb is from the 1975-1981 manual which i know is wrong. the 86-88 manual is likely much closer.

no luck on an '84 wr400 manual here, but i messaged HuskyT to ask
