  • Hi everyone,

As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Thanks for your patience and support!

Won't turn over? SMR 511 - Can't find the source!

Guys,I'm having trouble again... (seems to be a recurring theme)

I can't get the SMR to turn over. When I turn the key it would normally do its dash dance and make all the usual noises which I wait for before I hit the ignition. Then when I turn it off after a ride it makes another set of noises (the butterfly controller I think?)

Anyway, now when I turn the ignition nothing happens. When I hit the starter it makes the normal noises it would make when I turn the ignition on. Then it waits a second and then makes the noises as if I've turned it off.

I've pulled the spark plug and inspected it - looks fine. I tested it against the engine to see if it sparks and it doesn't.

I've checked all the wiring plugs and I can't seem to find any that have come loose.

Yesterday I went for a ride and it was doing something similar when I first started it in the morning, but after a few button presses and key jiggles it turned over, grumpily. Then when it was warm I had no trouble with it.

Help!

That doesnt seem to explain why it doesnt do the start up procedure until I press the starter though... its so confusing!

Also the start up sequence only starts when you push the starter (and not turn the ignition like normal). I also found out you can interrupt the start up sequence if you hit the kill switch... I just cant make sense of it!

I haven't, I don't have the kit. But yesterday when it was doing something similar it kinda sorted itself out after awhile of button pushing and jiggling. The battery isn't even a year old so surely its not that? Plus the start up sequence it does - it will only do that when I push the starter button and not when I turn the ignition key.

It was kinda running a little rough over the last couple of days - more backfiring and misfires than normal. That's why I thought it was the spark plug - but it looks fine but doesn't fire.

Would the battery explain it?

Does it start at all now or no?
It was sounding like the kill switch was pressed all the time, suppressing the start up cycle until the start button was pushed.

Just gotta start taking things apart man

Yeah that's what I was thinking over lunch... maybe theres a short in the kill switch?

I've got the battery on charge - in case it's that - although after 10 mins the charger said it was full. I'm going to tear apart the RHS switch assembly and have a fiddle.

Nothing but dramas with this bike. I'm sick of it. I've never had so much trouble with a bike than with this Husky and its incredibly disappointing.

So I reinstalled the battery and dismantled the RHS switch assy. Apart from a wasp cocoon and a dead spider in there, I've inspected it all and theres nothing wrong with it.

So, it still doesn't go through the start up procedure noises until you press the starter button, and then once it's completed that it waits a second or so and then runs through the shut down procedure noises. Holding the kill switch will sometimes stop it from completing the start up noises.

Still won't turn over, still wont turn the starter motor over. I've checked the wiring to the starter motor and they're still attached.

Oh, and to add insult to injury, I just noticed that someone has stolen my rear axle sliders right off the bike in the last two days. Fantastic.

This bike is cursed man

Ok guys, just had it in the dealership - if this happens to you its the starter solenoid. Not sure what it costs in the US but for us in Aus its $59 which isn't too bad.
