  • Hi everyone,

As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Thanks for your patience and support!

Which should I buy, TE449 or TE511?

This was exactly what I was referring to about durability but don't have expert knowledge on the subject.

and 511 - 449 difference is 62cc ....

no, 511 is a 477cc...62cc may be worth the extra $400...

forgot to add, JD box, FMF and Race mod (2 pin plug under the ECU), better then the 511...

Unless you do the same to a 511. I like the extra down low, it's a playbike for me, my 511 is the most agile big bore
I have ridden, plus the crack of the throttle wheelies are a blast for this old man....whichever you get, you will
Be grinning, just grease everything when you get it, and change the oil a lot! With a little prep, setup, it's great
In the woods, open, TT, etc...AWESOME. If I want really quick on the trail/woods, WR125 time!

The 449 is mainly for class limited racing. I've ridden both, the HP doesn't really matter, what matters is the +4 Ftlbs of torque which can be pretty expensive to add to the 449 later if that is your thought process. You can make a 449 a 511 later, but it will cost you a lot more than $400 to do it.

Another example where torque is a key factor. Here the EXC 450 has an even higher torque rating than even the 511 early in the power band.

I have the 511 and think it's great! I regularly race it in local harescramble races and it performs well. It's not quite as agile as a 310, but for a big bore bike she handles the tight stuff well. The bike pulls like a tractor on hills and it really shines when the trail opens up a bit. The stock suspension works fine for trail rides, but you will want to stiffen it up for "race pace". All that being said, when I was looking for one I just happen to run across a 511 before a 449. I think both would do just fine. Like others have mentioned, the 511 probably has a little more low end grunt. For reference, I am 180lbs and ride in western and central NC.

Makis,
Do you do any road riding on it at all and whereabouts do you live? I'm in Greensboro.
I haven't done much road riding with it. I mainly take it to off road riding areas like Brushy Mountain or Carolina Adventure World. I would like to do some dual sport rides in the future. The bike isn't really much of a road bike. It's good for trail to trail. I'm in Rutherfordton (NC foothills).

Henson,
I hope I don't get banned for saying so but I would love a KTM EXC but I can't shell out $10K and I can't find a used one.

It's not like the 449 would be underpowered but I just wonder with my weight 235, likely 250 dressed in gear, if that extra HP and torque might come in handy.

My 511 outran KTMs every weekend last year. You arent downgrading, you're getting a bargain.
