  • Hi everyone,

As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Thanks for your patience and support!

Which should I buy, TE449 or TE511?

About me: 235#, raced MX about 20 years ago, only plan or ride to the trail or maybe a few local errands but very little road use. I live in central NC so no super steep hills or deep sand.

I'm trying to chose between the TE449 and the TE511. Obviously the 511 puts out more HP and torque but do I really need it due to my weight? If the 511 was heavier it would influence my decision buts that's not the case. To me is seems redundant to produce two bikes that are so close in displacement but I'm sure I'm overlooking something.

Thanks in advance.

The bikes are the same except for 27 cc displacement and the price.

Thanks Radar, that much I'm clear on. So for an extra $400 I get an additional 27cc equaling about a 10% increase in HP and torque.

I see you went with the 449, any particular reason?

I am in the same boat. Leaning towards the 449 after the research I have done. Have an 08 450 SMR Love the power but want to do trails etc.. Personally I would buy the 449 I like the the faster revs and snappier/useable power. The 511 I rode was just as nice but was more of a tractor feel. Hard to manage in tight technical stuff. Wide open field or road I wouldn't be able to tell the dif as much.

I got my 449 as a year end deal, at that time 511s were long gone.

Would I have chosen differently if the price was that close?

Maybe, but I love mine. I would like to get a 511 before they are gone.

I think unless you are power hungry, the 449 would be suitable. The biggest difference is the low end torque, but to me, you wouldn't take advantage unless you doing hill climbs and such. And you could probably find a great bargain on a leftover 449.

Does the 511 use same parts but just bored out to 511? Which would mean engine longevitiy be better for a 449 vs 511 if maintained and used in same manners... ?? Something to think about.

Henson,

To my knowledge it's just bored out. The shop closest to me has 2 2013 511's @ $6500 and 3 2013 449's for $6100 add that to their sweet financing deal and it's a no brainer. I was really looking to go used but it's almost impossible to plate an off road bike in NC and I really don't want a watered down trail bike. I hope I don't get banned for saying so but I would love a KTM EXC but I can't shell out $10K and I can't find a used one.

It's not like the 449 would be underpowered but I just wonder with my weight 235, likely 250 dressed in gear, if that extra HP and torque might come in handy.

I was pushed more towards the 449 than 511, but it was purely for the off road stuff, seems the 511 is a lot more to handle than the 449, tbh I intend to use my 449 for varied riding, and still not sure I made the right decision, time will tell.

The 449 has more power than I need for trail riding and it was a better price.

seems the 511 is a lot more to handle than the 449,

I have ridden both back to back. The difference is slight. The 511 makes slightly more grunt off the bottom and a little more everywhere but it is not a big difference. The 449 seemed to rev slightly quicker and was slightly softer. Had i not ridden them back to back it would have been hard to tell. The 511 is not harder to ride because it makes way more power. The 449 is not slower because it makes way less. Nearly identical other than the 511 makes slightly more power just like you would think 27cc might.

For a open class e-start 4 stroke I think these bikes do really nice in the woods.

I hear ya... Maybe the 511 would be better then considering your weight. It'd be interesting to hear about difference in engine durability as that could be just as important - especially if you plan to ride it for longer periods of time.

You being 230lbs plus gear I would take the 511. You can always get a bigger piston and jug down the road.. When/if I ever sell my 08 SMR 450 im grabbing a TE 449/511 ASAP!

Would like to grab a 511 but after hearing all the horror stories from the efi 510's im hesitant, and since I own a 450 its not like i will be going down on cc's. Either way I think both bikes are great.

I highly doubt there is any durability issues as it is only 27cc we are talking about. A pipe adds more power than the 449 to 511 does.

Yeah, but with the same stroke, the cyclender walls are thiner in the 511...
449 made more sense...27cc not work the extra $400-$500...for that you can gets 449 and a FMF exhaust and JD Box...

This was exactly what I was referring to about durability but don't have expert knowledge on the subject.

and 511 - 449 difference is 62cc ....
