• Hi everyone,

As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Thanks for your patience and support!

What's your collective thought on what to race next?

Husqvarna
Pro Class
Let's start out by saying I really want to stick with Husky.

What would you suggest as the best direction to head with Andy?

Some facts…
- Just came off an '09 WR (cr) 125
- Have a Husky dealer real close; really into whatever's next…
- 3 hour races in the AMA hare scramble series
- 3 hour races in the GNCC series
- GNCC 'B' classes; 250 B (2S/4S), Open B (2S/4S), 4 Stroke B lights…
- Doesn't really want to do the 200 class thing again.
- Would most likely end up with 2 bikes; race & practice
- Dad (mechanic) is old school 2 stroke… (But a quick learner)
- Has FAR and the café for tech support…
- First AMA race January 22nd; first GNCC race March 13th

Thoughts? and Thanks...

Some excellent race bikes (after coming off a WR125) would be :
Husky WR250
KTM 350 SXF - probably the best enduro race bike in the world at present IMHO
Husaberg TE250
My 2 sons raced the KTM & Husaberg, respectively, with success this year and they loved the bikes so much they will campaign the same bikes again next year.

I am surprised no mention of a TC or TXC 250. It has good linear power and would help his corner speed. I like the WR 250 and is reliable as they come. B class is a tough class in the GNCC so whatever it is he needs to feel confident he is on the best bike for him.

The FAR Husqvarna guys had pretty good luck on the TXC250. The TC250 is probably the closest thing to the CR125.

raisrx, thats one of my concerns...he worked at the shop and knows the WR250 is dated. I bet we could make it work well, just not sure his confidence level would be up. Spending the whole year putting the 125 up against the orange 200s did teach him it's not all about the machine; a good machine helps, but not the total answer. The 250 B class is stacked with some good machines and riders...I really wish Husky had a top level 250 2S to throw in the fray.

I appreciate the different opinions...wally and raisrx, you are on the same track we are right now. If it's Husky then the TXC with the e-start, 6 speed tranny in the '4 Stroke B lites' may be the ticket. In the AMA it's 250B anyway, no lites class.

Have talked to Fred A and he offered up his help towards the tips to the hot bike setup; major plus.

Sam, one of Andy's major competitors for the local race overalls was on a KTM 350, xc i think. And yes, it hauls. At the Unadilla GNCC the ktm was 3rd oa and Andy 5th oa in the morning race. At a national in NJ Andy finished 2nd oa and 7 seconds behind the ktm..usually taking some major roost chasing him down!

I'm compelled to stick to something Husky, really good shop 15 minutes away that really cooperates with our program. Solid backing in our ventures, worth alot. Although I think he would help no matter what andy rode...

Seems like no other way than Husky 4S, TC/TXC - 250/310

Not bad...I could live with that...

I'll echo raisrx251 and wallybean. TXC250/310... Geometry, ergos and handling will be very much like the WR125. In spite of what some of the faithful say, the WR250/300 is sadly dated. Friend who is an A enduro/hs rider is switching from WR300 to TXC310 this coming season, as he prefers the newer frame.

Why not a 2011/12 cr150? parts swap, they fixed most of the junk that was lame on the 09's. You give up the 4stroke class but they work.

In Australia we do not see the TXC range unfortunately.

Interestingly, you may remember Glen Kearney (Aussie) on the factory Husqvarna in last years GNCC. Well, he is still on a factory Husqvarna in Australia this year, but it is a 310 kitted out to 340.
Yep, thats right a 340 and boy you should hear it. At every race meeting I could hear him coming as it had such an awesome sound and it hauled !! Sounded more like a 450 motocrosser with a straight through muffler. The engine compression must have been off the planet. I think he finished somewhere around 5th outright this year, mainly because of poor results earlier in the season whilst waiting for the 340 motor and still only punting a milder 310.

The bike is featured in this months Transmoto Magazine.

Is this a sign of things to come ??

mont...I would love to run the new CR150 and keep the WR(cr) we have as a practice/backup bike. That would be my direction in a heartbeat. Got a rider that wants to move on. Yea, I could just outright tell him 'this is what you're going to ride' and he would. Not my style... Would stick us back in the 200 class. Not sure I want to repeat that... Might be fun to stick the 310 up againt the 350/450's. Kind of like the 125 against the 200. Not sure.

Sam...you might recognize one of these guys, the other is mine.

Before Powerline Park 2010.

Tough Choice! I think he might get more recognition out of the TXC 250/310, rather than the WR250. That is great that Fred can help you dial those in.

If you go the WR250 route, I am willing to throw you some help in the engine/carb department. I have relatives on the Ohio/PA border and have access to a couple of shops and small track. If he wants to try mine and likes it. I need a good solid 8 hours in the engine and carb. The Wr 250 could be very dependable, though?

I have learned, that if the suspension is set up properly (Springed, Valved, Oil Height, Sags), the thing carves like butter, even with the old frame.

Thanx

Darin

how much heavier is the 250/310 over his 125? you dont want to kill the kid tryin to manhandle more weight than hes used too...i know hed have practice before the races start but justt tossin it out there. if the weight isnt much i say go the 250/310 txc.

Hey Darin...I was thinking 4 stroke for one year...then Husky's smokin' new 250 2 stroke the year after! Thanks for the tech support offer...ya never know!

5.9 , even though the TXC weight is significantly more, I've been told it's carried pretty low and really not too noticeable.

Yea, and 3 hours not 2...

Will clarify...'claimed weights'.

WR125 - 223 lbs
WR250 - 236
TXC250/310 - 240

Comparison...
KTM 250 2 stroke - 230 range
KTM 350 4 stroke - 240 range

So around 7 to 13 lbs increase for the 250 2 stroke and 17 to go to 4 stroke...

Although...TC250 , claimed dry - 221 lbs!!!

In the ammie/semi pro ranks 99% of us ride in. The "old school" WR250/300 has no handicaps if setup correctly. The ZipTy WR(CR)300 with Bobby Garrison won the OA at the MTA Glen Helen 2 stroke event against a stacked field of "way more modern" 2 strokes in 2010 and finished P2 OA against another stacked field in 2011.
I know that this 300 is a highly modded ZipTy developed machine, but everyone is always talking about how uncompetitive these old school machines are. If set up correctly in the world where 99% of riders live and race my 97 RM125 is competitive in my (Nat B) intermediate level class (as an example). All the new stuff does not make everyone faster and better riders. But I digress, TXC250 or 310 for 4T or WR250 for 2T, or 300 or 125 or 144 ( no help from me). I am 215lb and really like 125s in very tight curvy stuff. But a well setup plush suspended and motor with smooth clean power 250/300 2T can be pure magic, especially in the tighter stuff.
Best of show in 2012 with whatever you choose!
after all that said having FAR as a consultant I would get on the TXC250, all the R&D is done for you at the highest level in the same venues that you will ride.

I am sure glad it is you/Andy's call and not mine! Tough decision!

I do want a 2012, 310, 449 or 510 in the stable this spring.

So what is on the TXC250 (besides 18" rear, bigger tank and kickstand) that would cause it to weigh 19 pounds more? Heavier muffler? If so then that would need to be also replaced on the TC250 if you need a SA.

Mike, good question.

Also an extra gear, battery, starter.

I called the shop, the new tc has a complete new head design... Maybe a pound or two. I put my money on the exhaust system also.

Forgot about the new head and better performance. I guess the TXC is based off the TE. Looks like the TC would be my choice if racing.

Another thought. A start button is nice, especially if you stall or crash. Sometimes lap times are really close and nothing tics you off more, than you and another racer crashing, he gets up and hits his button, takes off, and you are kicking a hot/flooded bike.
