  • Hi everyone,

    As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

    When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

    Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

    Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

    Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

So, I am lifting my TXC510 2008 up onto a motorcycle stand and since I'm old and weak, I laid the bike flat on the stand on it's left side and torqued on the shifter. When I got the bike finally on the stand, I noticed that the shifter was at an odd angle and went to move it and it just flopped all the way down....as if it wasn't firmly attached to the shift shaft...well, it's still firmly attached...but the shaft seems to move without any resistance. The bike is currently in gear but no matter what I do, I can't get the shifter to do anything as it now seems to be attached to nothing. How is this even possible? Is my TXC510 that freaking fragile? I am super worried that I am not screwed. Please help.
 
Someone who has transmission experience might be able to give a quick fix, sounds like something slipped off/over/etc and might be able to be fixed easily. Here is a 2009 diagram, hopefully, its the same as your 2008.

sounds like the shift shaft. I had 1 fail on my 08 TE250 and the next year my buddy's failed on his 08 TE450. It's #49 on the dia. Not too difficult to replace, gotta remove the clutch basket to get to it. Good luck
 
What's the chance that he could pull the cover off, clean everything up, get the shifter in the right position, and then tack weld the shaft back onto the fork, if in fact, that's where it is broken?
 
Thanks for all the help everyone. I better get to taking her apart then. I guess I'll find out if it is the shaft, if I can go ahead and get it welded. Otherwise, I am praying it's not a bigger problem.
 
OHR this is just seat of the pants armchair trouble shooting about a known probable issue, you need to get in and really see what the issues is. Start simple and work your way in, thats the only way to go.
