• Hi everyone,

As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Thanks for your patience and support!

What engine oil are you using?

Boy Coffee... of all people to start an "Oil Thread"

OK I'll start...
Since I have almost a full case left over from my 510 I will be using

Agrip Racing 10W-60

And once that's gone I'll be using

Lucas Syn 10W-50

THAT is a good and obvious question! I have to agree with HuskyDude....It's classic that Coffee started this thread! :D

But I have no idea. I have always liked the factory BMW oil either in 10W40 or 10W50 depending on what time of year, but for this bike I will probably try the Amsoil. 10W40 is a good viscosity for my location, but I do wish they (Amsoil) made a 10W50.

My dealer put in Castrol Power RS 10w50, so I may just stick with that. My TE uses this, so it would keep things simple and might save me some money by the case. That will also cure my wanting a 10w50....perfect!

I will be running Castrol Power RS 10w50. Glad we cleared that up...thanks Coffee!

Whatever JASO rated oil is "On Sale" at the local auto parts store. Not a lot of people think of buying motorcycle oil there, so its a slow mover for them. Consequently, they will clear the shelf from time to time. That's when I stock up for half price!

Rotella T6 5w-40 (Blue bottle, Heavy Duty Engine Oil) is currently in my Terra (and Beemer and Berg). Bought several gallons at NAPA's last sale. It's good stuff too!

Hey Fab1....why would you desire 50w in Colorado?

Boy Coffee... of all people to start an "Oil Thread"
Notice that I did not ask
"what is the best oil?"
"what is the super duper perfect oil?"
"what oil should I use?"

I simply asked "what engine oil are you using" - so I can get a better sense of what is happening in those garages of the members, as opposed to a never ending debate (although this thread may get to that level at some point).

In addition I will be checking with people via other communications means to get even more input. :)

Similar to another thread about bike insurance, I am making some local documents and putting up screen shots periodically. At some point, it could live in html or some other easy to read format.

So far this is what we have:

In pretty much everything always...

Actually Coffee, this is a good resource. To find out what each of us use :)

Being an aircraft tech, I pretty much follow the book - AGIP 10W60. Winter storage is Rotella.

Dean:
I use AGIP 10-60, I believe that we have had a conversation as to why before but suffice it to say that I know a thing or two about oil.
Look what comes up as the 3rd result when I search for that. (sorry, had to) :)

And as the 1st result when searching 'buy agip 10w-60'. Clearly google is examining my cookie cache to decide what information to present to me...

I run Spectro off-road oil in my TE630 as I feel like that bike really needs a strong dose of ZDDP. For the Terra, I decided, for once, to use the specified Castrol oil and ordered a case of the RS1 Racing. I think if you just keep clean oil in the engine and change often, you can't really go wrong. Most bikes don't run for hundreds of thousands of miles; do that and your oil choice becomes much more important.

Ok, you said that on purpose, and it worked. You have ignited my curiosity.

Please share this "thing or two about oil" which you imply. It may be interesting to know...
