At Prospector’s MX in Gorman July 20th Nick Burson injured his left hand during the Pro race. Nick was making a pass and was between his competitor and a dirt wall on his left side. He hit something that kicked his bike to the left and smacked the wall with his left hand. Nick didn’t crash but continue on but soon realized something was wrong with his hand and pulled out of the race. In the pits the medics put a splint on it and thought he had broken a bone. X-rays at ER showed he had fractured his 5th Metacarpal, palm bone above his pinky finger. There was some displacement so they recommended we see an orthopedic. On Wednesday July 23rd we saw a hand specialist and discussed our option and choose surgery as the best option to speed recovery. Surgery was set for the next day, Thursday. The surgery was expected to last an hour but took 4 hours. Turned out Nick had a tumor in his palm and it had weaken the bone and it was actually broken into several pieces. Tumor was removed and thought to be benign but sent off to the lab and waiting results. It required a plate and many screws. X-rays of the finished product looked good and his hand is expected to heal without any issues. Nick is pulling out of the Las Vegas to Reno BITD race but the team will still race with Justin Morrow and Axle Pearson. Expect Nick to be on the starting line at the Silver State Trail Blazers National in Caliente, NV. He is more determined than ever to win the National Hare and Hound title. The doctor says with the plate and the bone has had some time to heal he will be ok but it will probably be painful. Nick is no stranger to pain. You don’t win Championships without experiencing riding hurt and overcoming the pain. If you heard rumors that Nick was pulling out of the ISDE in Argentina in November NOT TRUE. His hand will be plenty strong by then. Even know Nick has sponsors and rides for a Team Beta/Purvines he is expected to raise money to help with the team expenses getting to Argentina. He could use your support in raising these funds. You can help by going to his web site http://www.gofundme.com/NickBurson and donating. Some of the fund raiser that included riding will be put on hold till his hand heals fully. Thanks all the support has been great and much appreciated. Nick wants to make this a banner year with several District 37 Championship, National hare and Hound Championship and an ISDE Gold Metal.
