  • Hi everyone,

As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Thanks for your patience and support!

txc 250 efi 2010 multiple problems

I was out green laning with friends when 30 miles into the run we stopped to re-check map. i couldn't get my bike started again - battery seemed almost flat. Tried a few times with e starter and kick starter even tried to bump start no joy.Called out the AA recovery patrolman .He tried to start it with a booster pack, wasnt having any of it. Put the bike in my van took it home to my brother who is pretty handy mechanically. He found:
Nut came off water pump causing it to become displaced sheared two bolts and causing wear on the outer casing.
battery (flat hot to touch)
starter motor (hot to touch)
Seems odd that the battery would be flat after 30 miles of riding.
The booster put a bit of a charge back into the battery so think battery ok but still wouldn't start. Pleased the patrolman didn't get it started after my brother found the water pump damage etc. Has anyone had similar problems ?
Any help would be appreciated - thank you in advance.

No help here on the starting but that WP propeller is and has been a little on the weak side for yrs ... I put a high performance propeller on my 08 TXC250 and it was very loose fitting ... I used lock-tight stuff on the nut to help keep it from coming loose and once had to remove the propeller from a 2010 TC250 (xlite engine) and found it was very loose fitting on the shaft also ... Rider beware here...

Thanks for that - My brother who does the spannering on my bikes replaced the water pump and used lock tight on the nut holding it in position. He also put a new head gasket and rings after cleaning the head. I'm over the moon- more power and better fuel economy. Just need to fix the starter motor now ha. Atleast it can still start off the kick so it isn't a complete disaster.

Interesting Ste. I had a similar thing happen to me this Saturday on my 2010 TXC250 (xlite). The ride started normally as I pushed the magic button and bike fired up instantly. Rode it just past idle for a couple minutes to warm up the engine and then it abruptly died before I got out of the parking lot. I went to restart but there wasn't enough juice in the battery to turn the starter over on it's own so I helped it by kicking through. A couple more unsuccessful tries kicking and bump starting then the fuel pump wouldn't come on anymore. Seems my nearly brand new Ballistic Lithium Ion battery died instantly?! Luckily had a spare battery on hand so this wasn't going to ruin the day. Swapped it out, pushed the magic button and was running again (for now)...

Not even 15 minutes into the trails and the bike stalled on me. It seemed to stall rather unusually, not sure if it was me or the bike, but it was an abrupt stall, akin to a dead battery and fuel starvation on an EFI. Anyways I tried to restart it again not enough power to turn things over with just the starter so I had to assist by kicking at the same time. Seemed weird for a fresh battery?? Took about 10 attempts and it started again. Now every time I came to a stop and idled, the bike would stall. Each time I was able to restart by kicking but it seemed the starter sprag was stuck. I'm worried it may have been spinning the starter after the engine was running. I rode through the next short trail section and this time I start losing pressure in my clutch. This of course caused the next stall but when I look down I see a cloud of steam pouring out of a hole in my thermostat!

WTF?!!! Coolant got so hot it melted a hole in the side of my thermostat? I touched the rads expecting them to be scorching but they were cool to the touch. Seems like the thermostat got stuck closed but I'm also suspecting there was low coolant to begin with. I've never had the coolant out our checked. I bought the bike brand new and have very low hours on it (no time to ride). Game over for now. I got a tow out of the woods and loaded onto the trailer. Today I'm going home to start the tear down.

So far I know:

  1. Ballistic Lithium Ion battery DEAD (virtually brand new)
  2. Thermostat melted and coolant overheated
  3. Starter sprag gear seemingly seized
  4. Hydraulic clutch loses pressure
  5. ??
Multiple problems and no question, an expensive day.

Not sure what is going on but I can tell you of a problem I had with a similar bike. I will cut to the chase and say I had a light weight battery with a bad cell. It would start the bike but when the voltage would drop so low starting it, this messed up the EFI/ECU. It would run but stall easily almost like dirty gas. It wasn't until I tried kick starting it that I noticed it would run fine then. Of course this is not all of your problems, just letting you know the stalling issue could be caused by a bad ground or something is shorting out. I would try a fresh non-lighweight battery and when it's running see what your voltage is. Of course make sure the WP pump impeller is still there. If you do suspect a short, you can do the test light between the positive battery and positive cable trick. The test light will be bright for the first few seconds when the fuel pump primes, then should go to more dim than bright.

Thanks, I'm looking a little more into my Li-Ion battery... it went on the charger last night and I'll test it out this evening to see if it could be a bad cell. The grounding possibility would be trickier to troubleshoot so I'm hoping that's not the case here.

I opened the water pump cover and everything looks good underneath. I also pulled the flywheel to look at the sprag gear. It was partially gummed up with broken down oil which might explain the seized starter motor issues.

I'm wondering now if low coolant levels caused the engine to overheat. That could explain how the thermostat melted and where the oil breakdown in the sprag gear came from. Hmm, might even explain the clutch issue as well if it was running hot enough to boil clutch fluid?

Visual inspection of the rest of the bike is good so next step is to order a new thermostat and fill it back up with fresh oil and coolant to see if things go back to normal. Here's hoping!

I think the crossover hose was an issue blowing on some 450's. I don't remember anything about the thermostats being made of bad plastic. I don't even remember if my '10 had a thermostat! Some guys run without it, just be sure the bike is warmed up before riding if you go without a thermostat.
