  • Hi everyone,

As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Thanks for your patience and support!

Two General questions '86 400 WR

I've got two questions I've been contemplating, and I'm pretty sure some guys on here would know.

1) '86 WR 400. Standard WR fuel tank, no auxiliary tank. What's the fuel range on a single tank?
2) Same bike, 3rd gear is starting to slip out, so I'm assuming the dogs are worn on primary shaft 3rd gear. Do you replace just the 3rd gear, or do you do the 3rd and the double, and what about the gear on the other side of the double that also dogs into it? Seems like most of the time, when you replace one piece of worn metal the 'conventional wisdom' is to replace what it interfaces with as well, but by that logic, it doesn't take long to convince yourself to replace the entire gear-set.

On my 86 400 basket case 1,2 and 3rd gears were bad. Plus bent shifting forks. So be prepared to replace more than what you are thinking.
Sorry for the bad news Eric. Good news is you might be able to find transmission parts on e-bay. I got a perfect tranny for cheap. I bid $ 20
and got one. I love looking for deals so I will help you find one if I can.

all that should be needed is both 3rd gears. inspecting the others is a judgement call. its common for 2nd and 3rd to wear out.

I've had the bike for years, granted I picked it up as a kid and wasn't the best on maintenance or gentle use, I did maintain (not the best was not none) for the most part and haven't had any major 'events', for now I will remain hopeful, I've got a spare bike and some projects in the hopper so don't hold your breath waiting to hear an outcome on this thread.

Anyone have any ideas on the other question? Fuel range on the 400 with WR tank?

As for fuel range, I've seen an '86 WR400 go well over 100 miles on the stock tank in the desert. I actually ran the same bike out riding hard at about 80 miles.

80 - 100 kms is about normal (50 - 60 miles) but very susceptible to riding conditions slower woods style uses way more than open desert as you tend to be on the needle in the desert in higher gears while in the woods your wfo ( main jetting) in the lower gears a lot more.

If it is popping out of third a better double gear it pegs to would be in order. My experience has been some of those third gears have bad tooth faces, so. Use double one out of that. The wide ratio was still mostly same parts for another 10 years Approx.
