• Hi everyone,

As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Thanks for your patience and support!

TurnTech, Ebatt, or DIY?

In need of a new battery for my 09 TXC450. I'm quite intrigued by the LFP batteries. I noticed there was a thread here regarding a DIY setup, but he kept killing cells. Has anyone else DIY'd a battery using LFP cells and had success???

I hate to buy a pre-built one when I know I can build my own and enjoy doing it.

I did my own for my 510. Purchased my cells from this seller/auction actually.

He did the assembly/welding of the tabs for free, I asked for a 4S1P configuration in a square shape, thats 4 cells, with one parallel circuit which comes out to just over 13v. The batteries showed up already put together with the tabs spotwelded on. All I had to do was install wires for terminals and wrap the whole pack up.

All the cells were even at 3.34v and have been working well since I did it months ago.

I just ordered an 8 cell from Antigravity batteries. I also have a Turntech 4 cell. Just not quite enough oomphh. It comes with new #6ga leads and a quick disconnect, which is cool. I was waiting until I received mine before posting up. Plus there's a group buy discount right now.

e-batt went out of business a little while back.i have 2 in stock left $59.95 each.i have one in my txc 250 now for about 10 months and it has been fine.the turntech offers a cleaner set up tho.dan

Great input Dan :)

In addition, a long time ago, while very short on cash, I needed to replace my rectifier on a car. I was soooo proud of myself for saving the $20 by soldering up a solution with diodes... but within 200 miles it rained, and because I had not properly insulated it from the elements, it shorted out and killed the alternator... so then I needed to spend much more $ for a regulator and alternator.

Might want to think carefully before trying to create your own solution.

Thanks for the posts guys. Didn't know that about e-batt. While $60 is enticing, I think I'll still go for building my own. I like the fact that anti-gravity batteries uses the same A123 cells that nocontrol's ebay purchase uses. In my mind, that's a good sign that the batteries are decent.

Looks like I can get four of the A123's on ebay for $35, some shrink wrap, heavy wire and solder tabs should get me done for under $50. Not bad if it works well.

Be careful when DIY. Most are spot welded now. When soldering, be careful not to use too much heat.

Turntech has great tech support. My 5 ah wouldn't hold a charge a few months ago. He told me to send it to him for inspection and he'd let me know the price once the fault was determined. 10 days later, a brand new upgraded battery appeared on my doorstep! No charge.

i bought the antigravity this time around......its one heck of a battery for the price, the cables and connector you get are first class, plus the cells are a123's

A little bumpity for those still interested in batteries.

Theres a new battery on the market. Its from Shorai, I bought mine from here:

More info on the forum here:

Its a LiFePo4 battery like the other a123 -based batteries but this one uses flat cells instead of round. It will not drain and can hold its charge for a year or more. They have a 2 year warranty, and are LIGHT and CHEAP.
The LFX-07 ($100) and LFX-09 ($110) would be the two best options for anyone here. From my understanding, the larger LFX-09 will let you a longer cranking period and be better suited for a bike with many upgrades like heated grips, lots o lights, etc.. Oh and the polarity is which side the pos/negative terminals are on, for those bikes with really short cables. I didnt understand that at first :D

Mine should be here witihin the next few days. Ill post up some pics and feedback when I get it.

I like the connector options on those "antigravity" batteries. I feel the connector lugs on the turntechs are its major weakness. Even with the 5ah being physically so small, those lugs stick up nearly touching the bottom of the seat pan. A little flex on the seat and they'll touch and break the hidden soldered connections within the battery case. I'm most likely going to trim mine down so I don't lose another battery and get stuck in the middle of nowhere. Super-B look like a good product, kinda pricey but perhaps you get what you pay for?

P.S.- good to see you around here again, Mike!
