• Husqvarna Motorcycles Made In Sweden - About 1988 and older

  • Hi everyone,

As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Thanks for your patience and support!

Troubleshooting 1987ish SEM Ignitions

Is there a printed procedure for testing the external pickup SEM stators? I had found a procedure in a service manual for testing the older SEM that was used from 1982 to approx. 1986. I would like to be able to test a small number of newer stators and rotors that I will be using with pitbike CDI and coil combos

The later SEMs have an upright that is the timed current to be supplied to the coil. I can supply a photo later. I need to know the functions of the 2 turquoise blue leads coming off the stator. I already know the functions of the green, black and yellow circuits

The first pic shows the stator with the external pickup. The second shows the blue wires I have the question about

What ignition is on your 88 430? is it a CR or WR? I got 4 of these ignitions from justintendo and they were all used on a 1988 WR

What ignition is on your 88 430? is it a CR or WR? I got 4 of these ignitions from justintendo and they were all used on a 1988 WR

my 88 is an XC
my 87 is a WR, also have 2 XC's
they all have Motoplat
my 87 250XC had SEM but nothing like yours
my 87 CR250 has an SEM but never had the side cover off, only rode it a couple times, kinda museum type thing

i looked at the fische for 88 and found nothing like that although they are sometimes a little generic
but,,,, looking at the 87 fische i found a similar looking one for the 87 XC250, not sure what they look like in the real world

I have read the tech data and it states that all WRs from 86 on came with Motoplat Mini 6 when I have heard of so many actually to have had SEM on WRs while XCs would use the Motoplat

Twin stator one is the lighting two yellow wires. The other stator is the ignition.

I took my first ride on my 83 husqvarna 250wr with the SEM for its very first ride. We got home and I washed the dirt off with a garden hose. After that the SEM failed. I didn't seal the ignition cover.

We had a state of the art high tech electronic lab that could melt the coating off the stator to see what failed but I never had the time to get it done. I have rolls of copper wire for re winding lighting coils.

The husqvarna chainsaws used SEM ignition too. The magnets in the flywheel we would re-epoxy. The original epoxy would crack.

In the test lab we used some type of an acid. We had a special machine to do it. We would inspect our vendors parts to see why they failed.

Those blue wires aren't just the stand off trigger wires ?
All the chinese ones and the newer honda postie have two wires from the trigger.
Use a multimeter set on ohms and probe the wire insulation close to the trigger and see if there is a connection to the end of those wires.
Easier done than said.
Cheers

im almost positive jimspac that the one you have pictured with the neatly taped off connectors was the original one on my 88 xc250. its weird as it has the mounts welded for the triangular cdi box, 2 430xc i have seen have motoplat instead and have the different mounts. i have a stash of frames as well and none have the mount for the triangular sem box.

It would be helpful to know what all of those came from yearwise as only Motoplat is shown as standard in the tech sheets that cover from 1981-1988

according to the Husqvarna fische they were used on the 87 250XC as the CR was a different system generating power for the solenoid power valve
the XC and CR use the same CDI trigger as you say triangular shaped but it seems to be specific to the 87 year model as i don't see the CDI box on any other years
now as far as an 88 goes there is a possibility that an 87 was badged as 88 due to arriving late
