  • Hi everyone,

As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Thanks for your patience and support!

Trail Tech Vapor 449/511

So, does any have the Vapor tach working on a TE449/511? I tried the coil direct connection to the blk/red wire, tried wrapping around the coil, tried a few other things and nothing has worked. The best result I got was with a direct connection to the coil lead, but the tachometer goes haywire for extended periods. I contacted Trail Tech and they're out of ideas. If anyone has a Vapor hooked up and working, please post how you did it. Thanks!
Yes, someone please comment on this -- as I am wanting to install this same dash on mine. I want it for oil, tach, and visible functions. Thanks Evan for asking this question.

Hey everyone. I have been watching this thread for a while and decided it was time for a Tach for my 511. I did not go the trail tech route. I got one that is a completely sealed unit with no wires in or out, and no ground. It works great! It is a Hardline products Hour/Tach. For install I just stripped one end of the wire and stuck it in the plug that goes into the coil/spark plug cap. It is the red/black wire and I just stuck it in the female side and plugged it back in. The indicated RPM were way off at first but after messing with the settings I found that 1P2r was correct for this bike. I immediately found that my idle was a bit too low (~1850) so I adjusted it and took it for a ride. It has worked perfectly with no erroneous readings. It does not plug directly into the meter which is why I don't think it has the issues of giving strange readings after running for a while. If anyone is looking for just a tach that is super easy to install and works great, this one is definitely the way to go. I just velcro-ed it to my handlebar mount below my speedo display so I can still see them both clearly. If you get this tach, DO NOT TRY TO WRAP IT AROUND THE COIL! I wasted 2 hours wrapping it around every part of the coil I could to no avail. Our coil is what they call a pencil type and it says right on the instructions that you have to wrap the wire around the spark plug to get it to work. That is not possible on our bikes, so connecting it to the red/black wire is the only way. I would like to thank everyone on this thread for having all the problems with the trail tech products. You made this purchase/install SO much easier.

You don't have to tap into any wire, just pull your coil out of the top of the head and wrap the tach wire around it like this. Easy :)

Just FYI, this does not work on our bikes for some reason. It is shielded somehow and the pulse is not picked up by the wire wrapped around the coil. I tried wrapping it around different areas and wrapping it different number's of times and it did not work. Connect to the red/black wire.

Thanks, I got one of these Hardline hour/tach meters, too. Works real easy. I just wrapped the wire around the red/black wire that goes to the spark plug, like you stated. It works real nice. Set the meter to 1P2R and all is well. Thanks for posting this info.
