• Hi everyone,

As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Thanks for your patience and support!

hi guys. I'm currently in Teheran with a busted crank shaft. and will need a new one. can you guys help me locate one? Or help me find out if they are interchangeably with any of the bmw crank shafts.

i am posting this everywhere i can think of. as it is difficult to have reliable Internet access here.

any help is greatly appreciated.

Paging turtlemoye!

I'm not a mechanic by a long shot and I haven't reviewed the conversion spreadsheet recently but I have recently started working at a BMW dealer and have access to mechanics, diagrams for both bikes, etc and can try to be a resource for the group. Feel free to reach out to me if you or anyone else have compatibility questions.

Just in case this helps, this is a link to the parts diagrams for the Terra.
http://docs.wavenetworks.us/parts//2013-2014 TR650 Parts.pdf

Crankshaft is on page 31. The Husqvarna part number is 8530458

Here's a parts diagram of the crankshaft from all of the BMW 650 models...

Not identical but perhaps looks like it might be a direct swap. Perhaps the husky version has been trimmed down a bit to lose weight ???? but I'm no mechanic

confirmed: the crank shafts are different. Diagnosis: connecting rod pin is totally shot. bearing as well. connecting rod itself may still be ok, but best to replace. so I am now officially in search of a full crank shaft including connecting rod and bearing.

Have you called any dealers or KTM to see about parts availability? If you need help with that feel free to PM me, I will try to do what I can. There is a complete bottom end on Ebay for $750 OBO. You might consider that, or see if the seller would harvest what you need for a reasonable price.

I am in contact with KTM HQ through my Husqy dealer in Belgium. I hoe to know more tomorrow.
But if you can share the link to the Ebay parts that could be very helpful as well

All the cranks for the BMW Rotax 650's are the same but they redesigned it for the Terra/Strada, I assume it is lighter to handle the higher RPM

Of all the things that could happen during a long-way-around trip, losing a crank is not one I would have planned for. Best of luck duibhcek!

Wishing you the best of luck to get over this unfortunate hurdle and continue your amazing journey.

thanks, nor something I had planned for. But we are trying hard to find a solution

Wishing quick repairs duibhceK

I'm curious what led up to it, what happened, sounds events, things we can all pay attention to if it happens to us. Have you trouble shot the issue, know the cause?

I would say an 07 g650x crank assembly (rotating parts) would be a pretty darn close match. The piston don't have the fancy plastic rub blocks, but it does have the valve reliefs. If I did that, I would probably detune the cam just to be safe.

I am just as curious as you. From looking at the parts it is clear that the connecting rod bearing failed and led to the rest of the damage. It is unclear why the bearing failed. The most obvious cause would be lack of oil. But all other parts looked in good shape and well covered in oil.

latest news from the dealer is that no crank shaft assembles are currently readily available at KTM. So that is some bad news. I have tried contacting the seller of the 2 bottom ends on ebay through the Ebay ask the seller communication system. but no response so far. Is any of the US members able to contact that seller? I am currently thinking of getting the bike out of Iran on a truck and getting one of those bottom ends sent somewhere more convenient

so far all of the connections I have tell me the same thing: no cranks in stock at ktm. Planned to be back in stock in 2 weeks but no guarantee. And they all agree that in the past for Husqy parts it has happened often that parts remained in back order for weeks after the quoted date. I can't take that risk with the visa counting down.
So if anyone from stateside is able to put me in contact with the Ebay seller quoted above that would be immensely appreciated.
