  • Hi everyone,

As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Thanks for your patience and support!

so long story short, i went to replace my water pump and my entire water pump shaft fell out of place causing it to come completely out of time. i knew what had happened so instead of just sticking it back togather and trying to start it i got it to where i believed was top dead center and alligned all the markings on the gears to where they should be (so i thought) and turned it over very very slowly by hand and it locked up. i knew better than to keep trying to turn it over so im sure i didnt damage anything. i need to know if there is a marking on the flywheel or anywhere that shows top dead center and where timing gear, and cam gears should be facing or aligned to. there is white markings on all the gears, i believe the white markings on the cam gears shout be facing straght up, and the timing gear's marking is facing straight up in line with the marking on the head? but i could be totally wrong ive never been in a husky 4 stroke engine.

Find top dead center using white markings. You can also feel it when turning by hand. The piston won't want to stay at tdc so it will want to swing just below. I like to use a wooden dowel in the spark plug hole too. When the dowel is all the way pushed out by the piston you know you are at tdc. Put the cam lobes facing down. The timing gear will also have marks to allign with the case. In summary. Find tdc, align cam gear and make sure lobes are facing down.

Put the cam lobes facing down. ........ and make sure lobes are facing down.

I have a question about the statement above......when I check my valve clearances, I put the motor at TDC and the cam lobes make a "pitched roof" shape, facing up and in, like the pic below (courtesy of dfeckel)

..what does lobes facing down mean?

I will retract my lobes down comment and clarify by saying lobes need to be positioned so that they do not contact the valves. Valves need to be fully closed at tdc. The last bike I timed the lobes needed to be down for this to occur. on the husky, if the lobes are down they would in fact be opening the valves. Don't listen to everything you hear or WRITE on the Internet ;)

Thanks guys, i will get her all fixed up tonight. I used to race suzukis and i was rebuilding my rmz450's 2-3 times a season so when this happened i figured it cant be that differnt inside and i could do a rmz blind folded.......man was i wrong, ive never had to open up any of my 5 previous huskies, i usually race them for a season and sell them so when i pulled the valve cover you could imagine i was a little confused compared to the what the inside of the rmz's.

thanks for your help!
