• Hi everyone,

As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Thanks for your patience and support!

TE630 - Noise when idling

Grez

Husqvarna
A Class
Putting the bike away after a days riding and noticed a lot of rattling around the clutch area in neutral but nothing when in gear. I walked the bike up the drive in gear and it was quiet but when I shifted into neutral in the garage it sounded like a tin of bolts. Also noticed on the ride was reluctant to start when in gear. Bike has done 4000 miles.

Anybody have any suggestions or is it a case of "they all do that sir" ?

If it was me i would drop oil, pull and check basket filters, pull clutch case and check clutch cush washers, check woodruff key and make sure its all ok .. Is the bike new to you ?

I guess it depends on how bad it is. They're known have a draggy clutch, making them harder to start while in gear w/the clutch pulled in. Putting it in neutral solves that. Once mine is warmed up, there's not much drag, though.

Stujam is on the money with pulling the clutch basket and looking around. Those cush spring washers are pretty flimsy and most people replace them with beefier ones. I had over 9000 miles on mine before I did that, though. Mine were worn, but not in any danger of failing and throwing parts all over the place.

My 2 cents, my bike has a fairly loud neutral gear rattle. Was there new and is unchanged to this day. It is a fairly large single piston causing large power pulses through the transmission. There isn't any damping effect unless the clutch is ingaged.

Thanks guys, will join the long list of other things that need fixing (Jeep, 1150 GS).

Looked up the manual and assume the clutch cush washer springs are the 6 springs holding the pressure plate on (no idea where to get beefier springs in the UK though - are they a Husky item?) though can't find a woodruff key in the pictures - anybody able to post a diagram, would be greatly appreciated ?

More research done, see it is the 6 springs and 12 washers on the back plate - now just need to find a source of beefier washers in the UK (If they are only available in the USA where can I get them - found a guy called Indy Unlimited on the ADV Rider forum but is there anywhere else as I can ge them sent to Dallas and brought back from there).

Hey Geez,
I think you are finding out most folk contact indy unlimted via advrider . I did my 610 clutch and 2 others belonging to friends on advrider .
Heaps of info in the sticky up to on this 610/630 forum

Spring cup Washers from indy unlimited ( you could look at getting some machined locally) rivets and all other washers from halls cycles usa . Exchange rate was good at the time so it was not expensive . When you start googling you will find more and more info / threads about this .
Most bikes need it doing anywhere from 3/4k-10-15k. Indys washers are much tougher then stock husky washers . While there check torque nut on the counterbalance shaft - its is known to come loose and the woodruff key behind break .

Stujam,

Thanks for the info. I will try to pull it apart over the next few weeks two and see what is going on. I can get stuff sent to Dallas and then onwards cheaper than here as the tax man allways wants his cut. Will try to talk the fitter at work into giving me a hand (if he can fix the plant our guys regularly destroy a bike will be a holiday for him)

I will post photos and notes when I get it done.

my 610 developed this same rattle after i replaced the spring cup washers, i assume i didn't get the rivots tight enough, but i'm not sure, i've had it apart a couple times to see if it was coming apart, everything looked good. i planned on tearing the basket apart again but haven't yet. it only rattles in neutral, so i been running it, put about 5k on this way.

Does anybody have an e-mail address for Indy? I am going to investigate in a week or so and was going to drop him a line to see if he still does the washers and what the cost would be. Can't post on the ADV Forum.

I got my spring seats made by Bespoke Bits Click for link from tool steel. They were a great company to deal with.
These are the dimensions i got mine made to.
16mm O/D, 8mm O/D spigot x 4mm long, total length of seat 7mm
Just to be clear, small part (spigot) that goes inside the spring - 4mm long
Wide part that spring seats on - 3mm thick

If you pull everything apart and it all looks ok, then depending on how severe the noise is it could just be clutch chatter. Mine makes a slight chattering noise at idle with the clutch lever disengaged. I'm pretty used to it after driving cars with getrag transmissions.

Difficulty starting when your bike is cold and in gear is also normal. The wet clutch will still drag with the lever pulled because fluid viscosity is higher when it's cold.
