  • Hi everyone,

As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Thanks for your patience and support!

TE511 Air Filter Mod

Apri11

Husqvarna
A Class
My thoughts on the stock air filter setup are a little mixed, I just think a little more thought should have went into it's design. The relocation of the air box under the seat was a good idea, the filters seem a to keep a little more clean. My gripe is with the filter media setup and how it is mounted. I've been playing around today as I had some time and thought I'd share an idea. Give me your opinions good or bad.

1ea x Pod Filter
1ea x 50mm Type E Poly Camlock
1ea x Hose Clamp

The idea was to mod the 50mm Camlock coupling by cutting down to size a little, the pod filter will be secured on the end which was cut down and the other end will slip into the intake trumpet.

Slipped into the end of the intake trumpet and secured with hose clamp.

Insert the air box cover less the original filter and cage.

I like the idea of just removing the camlock to remove the filter. Be careful there isnt a "tent" for air to enter where the camlock goes over the stock boot. By tent I mean a raised part of the lip caused by any difference between the diameters of the mating surfaces.

I haven't tested yet, only idled in the garage. I'm a little sceptical myself, getting opinions first before I decide to actually test this thing for real.

Heck, if it doesn't leak, go for it. I've seen a thread here on CH a couple of years back where someone did that with a K&N pod.

Check your spark plug now before you ride it. There will be more air flow now also so you might need more fuel added, not sure how it will compensate. I.e. make sure it won't be running too lean.

I like the stock setup. It cannot move out of place as is possible with your setup. I don't think it has the surface
area of the stock setup either. The 449/511 engine parts are very expensive to count on a device with 2 joints
that can move or come loose. No disrespect intended, but your setup is what I ran in the 70's. A good set of
Rollers/whoops and it could come loose. Why would you chance it?

I tend to agree with you 100%, I'm not sure whether I'm going to risk it really.

Removing the venturi will reduce hp output.

I agree, but removing the airbox *should* add some HP.

I wonder if we can find a velocity stack-esque connector that can be shoved into the K&N and test it back to back with this setup. This setup pulls a ton more air than the stock airbox. I need to find a buddy with a dyno so I can test all these changes!

You would only gain top end with the air box loss, but you will lose power in the lower rpm's without the venturi.

Do you feel any differences in power at all with your mod compared to the stock setup?

There is definitely power to be had in the airbox. Rearwheelin got an extra 2 or 3 HP to the wheel by removing the air filter and lid altogether.

But is it really worth and will you really feel it is questionable.

Hard to say. Even in race map 2 mode, the bike will not run with this mod. I have a PCV with AutoTune that fixed the lean condition so it could run. The bike makes very good power and I highly highly doubt there is much power loss because the velocity stack is out of my equation. I guarantee this setup makes up for any trivial loss by removing the velocity stack. The inside of the air filter is also tapered so I am perfectly fine with this setup. This filters flows for 3 times more HP than the 511 can even make.

for me no as I ride bottom and mid 95% of the time. BUT, I do like the idea of positive sealing and the stock airbox kind scares me. I love how it works but question how well it seals and hate that I cant check it to see.
