  • Hi everyone,

As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Thanks for your patience and support!

TE511 - 2011 model?

Red dust

Husqvarna
Hi. This is my first post. I got a big & heavy but quite capable Yamaha XT1200. The thing is I think it is too heavy and big to jump with and ride on single trails so I have been looking around at different bikes and I saw a Husky at my local bike dealer that only have extremely low miles on the odo, almost brand new but much cheaper than new. I took it for a spin and was impressed and being from Sweden where Husky originally comes from it did not feel worse. Once back from my 5-10 min test ride it seemed to leak quite a lot and looked like oil, the sales person was in one way happy since they did not take it for a ride themselves yet so they could rectify the issue whatever it was, might duck into the dealer tomorrow and ask about what was wrong.
I believe this forum would be the best place to ask questions about Husky's so here are mine:
How often do I need to check the valves, I guess oil change is every 500-1000 km`s?
After how many km`s/miles should the engine be reconditioned? I heard after only 10000 km`s :-o
Does the "anti slip" system that Husky got make it worse to change sprockets, can not remember exactly what i does but it has something to do with the chain.
Heard about lot of people got problem with speedo malfunction, easy to change the unit to an aftermarket one?
Best/worst tank range?
People try to convince me to buy a Yamaha or a KTM instead due to electronics on the Husky is really bad I have been told, I have read some quite good reviews about the Husky`s, who to believe?
Is this TE511 more expensive in maintenance than other brands?
Is it a good bike if you like to cross creek crossings?
Does the 2011 differ much from the 2012-13 models?
I really liked the power but only rode it on bitumen, maybe I will be better off with a less powerful bike in the dirt?
Many thanks from down under!

i change every 400km oil.. but ride only dirt.

oilfilter every second change.

so far 2200 km since sep 13. and no trouble except i wanted more throttle response ..
but we have fixed that.

511 is a great bike. its a head turner. the whole bike, the way the swingarm and tank is installed plus the design.

and with that home made modification u can get a grunty awesome bike.

I am in victoria/ boronia.

# I'm checking my valves every 50 hrs, haven't had to change setting yet (Keep your air filters clean) Oil every 5 hrs & filter every second change
(Hi-flo filtro is around $15 dollars - Husky/BMW filter is $32!!)

After how many km`s/miles should the engine be reconditioned? I heard after only 10000 km`s :-o

# It is a race bike engine (same as WR,CRF, KTM etc) - 10,000km is a long way for any of these.....

Does the "anti slip" system that Husky got make it worse to change sprockets, can not remember exactly what i does but it has something to do with the chain.

# It does a bit, but how often are you going to do it. I ride hard in the bush & the original steel sprocket & chain set have done 110hrs/3300km....

Heard about lot of people got problem with speedo malfunction, easy to change the unit to an aftermarket one?

# Yes you can, but mine is fixed after fitting a lighter lithium battery to the bike.

Best/worst tank range?

# depends on where/how hard you ride. Most rides we do, I'd say 100 to 120 km max range off-road. never gone far on the tar to see.

People try to convince me to buy a Yamaha or a KTM instead due to electronics on the Husky is really bad I have been told, I have read some quite good reviews about the Husky`s, who to believe?

# Nothing wrong with either of those bike to compare, I love my TE449 now that I've fixed the tuning, suits me better than the new WRs & ktm/berg/husky clones.

Is this TE511 more expensive in maintenance than other brands?

# No, unless your're buying a genuine oil filter, otherwise, the same.

Is it a good bike if you like to cross creek crossings?

# The air inlet is above the RH radiator, I've had mine 1/2 up the radiator fins (head under water) & still running, you decide. :)

Does the 2011 differ much from the 2012-13 models?

# A bit, but not much.

I really liked the power but only rode it on bitumen, maybe I will be better off with a less powerful bike in the dirt?

# Me too, TE449 is only 20cc smaller than the 511, so not too different. It is a good match for a FE501 Berg.
If you aren't riding 450cc dirtbikes already, it is a friendly handling bike to learn on. Good traction up hills & doesn't do anything stupid.

I'm happy with mine now.
