  • Hi everyone,

As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Thanks for your patience and support!

TE510 : Should I ?

Hi Guys

I haven't posted much in this section of the forums as I usually hang out in the 610 Section.

You may have guessed I have a 610, It's an 2009 SM and I really enjoy riding the bike.
I've recently got into doing Green Lanes, single track etc but the bike isn't particularlly suited for the riding I want to do.
Have already fitted some TE Wheels and front Caliper to make it better, but the suspension isn't right and wants to chuck me off at every rut. So I've been looking at changing the bike.
I like Huskies so not looking to change brand unless I need to.

There's a 2010 TE510 that I've seen on Autotrader and I'm going to have a look at it on Saturday. Possibly part ex the 610 against it for a fair price.

It looks really clean from the pictures, almost immaculate.
It does have 3000 Miles on the clock, should that be a concern ?

I've seen a fair few posts about the 510 and I have a couple of niggles about getting one.
Mainly the fact everyone says its really vibey, and the close ratio box.
I don't mind the service interval for the oil changes, can do them in the garage in no time and oil isn't that expensive.

I don't ride much, if at all on the road on a day to day basis, so won't be clocking up the miles.
I've got a car for commuting, but I will need to ride on the road to get to the offroad sections.

I guess the distance to the offroad sections could be 10 - 70 Miles along dual carriageways.
Am I going to hate it ? or is it just a case or regearing a little to be able to ride at 65 -70Mph

My brother has a 690 Enduro R and he keeps telling me to save up some cash and get one...

What are your opinions ?

I know most people may say get a 610 TE but there really aren't many out there.

Thanks
Gav

The 510 is NOT a street bike! Doing 70 miles @ 70 MPH would be asking a lot. In my opinion. But for the sheer power and grunt in the bush or fire roads... it will shine.
I went the other direction when I had mine and went up two teeth at the rear. Which took away top speed (which I was not after) and made it more friendly on tight trails.
3000 highway miles is just broken in. 3000 bush miles is...well is a lot.:excuseme:

3000 miles is not alot, I have 13,000 miles on my 450. The 510 does vibe more than the 450, strokers are like that. I've ridden 50 miles one-way to the trails and 50 home, and it's not fun, even tho I am geared to do 60mph at 5500rpm. The 510 will wear knobbies down real quick, like 500 miles and you'll be doing the sideways slide with every throttle burst. Handling is some of the best, get it dialed in for your style and you can run with anybody.

The most I have ridden is 40 miles on hard surface with my TE450 and it was more than enough-already. I need to admit though that I have a 610 too and a little spoiled.

Heya Guys

Thanks for the info and feedback.
I've just been reading your report on the 450 as Dual Sport bike HuskyRider and it's a great read and very informative.

When I say I'd be doing 70 mile journeys on the Motorway / dual carriageway the reality is it probably wont be that far but I just wanted to put a number in there to see whether it's capable of doing such a distance.

The last ride we went on was about 10 - 15 miles of 70mph roads to get to the trails

I'll take a look at the bike at the weekend and have a ride, see what I think of it.

Close Ratio Gear box really stinks in my opinion if you do any more then 20% road riding - even with changes of sprockets. I have a te 250 (close gear) and have ridden a 450 both close gear ratio and wide gear ratio. The wide gear ratio was so much more of a joy to ride but that's just my opinion. Can't tell ya much on the 510, never ridden one..

The close ratio gearbox is actually a plus in the 10mph - 50mph dirt sections because there is always a perfect gear. Yeah, it's a pain to shift so often but I've learned to love it

True True. Off road , nothing beats close gear ratio for sure.

I wouldn't mind the close-gear ratios as much on road if 6th was a bit more effective. It's quite difficult to find a bike that is capable off road and still able to maintain highway speeds but I imagine the 510 would be close if you get the right sprocket setup.

I too really enjoyed the TE510 I had for several years. Geared a bit higher with a 15/45 for more high speed runs was fine for me. As long as I kept it under 6000 rpms, where the hp starts to dramatically rise, the engine was just idling along without any real effort.

It may vibrate more than a counter-balanced engine but it never seemed to interfere with my enjoyment and never ceased to put a huge grin on my face when working the throttle.

20 miles of pavement was not an issue for me other than the stock saddle might kill you. The 510 will eat the 690 alive, at least mine did.

You may want to check the hours on the bike also. Mine, when I sold it had roughly 8000 miles and the valves were still within factory spec for clearance. They never required an adjustment from the time I picked the bike up new. The 510 is backed by some serious punch when you have the dirt in front of you and when the suspension is tuned for your weight/riding style. It will slice through rough terrain like you were riding on pavement.

The only reason I sold it is that I enjoyed some pavement use around town (knobbies dont' last long on the 510 especially when on pavement) and when riding remote locales alone I wanted to reduce my risk with the tempations the bike evokes since the performance envelope is enormous with the 510. That and recovering from a broken neck that occured while riding my mountain bike calmed me down a bit and made me think twice about getting seriously injured again.

I say look at the bike and ensure it is OK mechanically .. and get it especially if you intend to ride in the dirt.

Thanks for the response Fast1

How many hours should I expect to see on a bike with 3400 Miles ?
I assume something in the region of 70 - 100 Hours maybe even more.

I noticed from the photos of the bike there have been some parts that are safety wired.
Would someone normally bother doing that to an enduro bike ? I've seen pictures where the Sumo racers do this.

If the bike has 3400 Miles but say a lower hour number the bike would have been used constantly at high speed.
Would that be something to avoid per say as it could have been a race bike.

How do you check the hours on the 2010 bikes ?

The only time I ever safety wired a bike of mine was to meet track requirements. Road race time is hard
On engines. I would look for a trail ridden specimen.

Hi James

Thanks for that.
I also think the bike is too clean to have done 3500 Miles off road.
There isn't the signs of wear you would expect looking at the photos. :/

May still head up there to take a look and have a ride to see whether it's worth looking for another.

It's a 2010 and up for £3500 GBP

Would be looking at Part Ex against my 2009 610 (4000 Miles) for it as I don't have all the cash for another bike.
I may just put the 610 up for sale privately as think it would be easy to sell.

Just a comparison for you.. I just picked up a 450 that was ridden mostly trails with a few roads in-between , probably 85% dirt as it had the wear.. he had just under 50 hours clocked and around 1,000 miles.

That bike looks clean and was probably ridden as much street as on trail if not more on street.. I got mine for $3,000 - with title and some baja equipment.

Don't mind the safety wire. I went through my bike and safety wired common items that loosen up. Subframe bolts, exhaust to frame bolts( weak factory ones threads fell apart and replaced with high quality SAE bolts I had), exhaust springs, kickstand springs, O2 block off plug, oil and radiator overflow together, brake caliper pins, engine to frame bolts, and of course grips. Maybe overkill, but I know that I will be returning with the same parts.
