  • Hi everyone,

As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Thanks for your patience and support!

TE449 first service and mods.

So I've got 200 miles on my bike now and I figured I'd change the oil and bolt on all the aftermarket parts I've been buying. So far I've put on,
Full FMF exhaust w/JD programmer
Fastway pegs
7602 radiator braces and guards
Cycra hand guards
14 t front sprocket
Mountian brake and clutch levers
Renthal bars
Scotts damper
Scotts shark fin
Pirelli MT 16 tires
Moose UHD tubes
Suspension sprung for my weight and valved for woods by FC. Shock shortened 4mm.
Uptite skid plate

I drained the radiators before I removed them to put the guards on, the coolant was brown when it came out. After it sat overnight in a clear contianer I could see there was a layer of brown fudge at the bottom and the rest of the coolant was the normal green color. I've run water through the system twice hoping to clean any crap out. I'll put new anti-freeze in next.

I changed the oil. I am a little concerned with the oil that came out of the bike because it smelled like gas. The oil looked very good, and the magnet on the drain plug didn't have a lot of metal on it, but there was almost 1.5 qts of gas smelling oil in the bike. I re-filled it with non-synthetic 10w40 and will change it again in a hundred miles. I looked for pinched vent lines on the fuel tank but didn't find anything. I haven't been beating the bike during break-in, but I'm not babying it either. I'm hoping the rings have seated and the next oil change will be a little more normal.

I saw the manual says to run 10w40, so I did. A lot of people here are running 10w60, is that something I should do? I wanted to stick with what the manual said to be safe. Thanks.
I'll put some pics of the bike up tomorrow.

I have about 80 miles so far and was wonding what the recommended mileage is for first services.

Wow. Sounds like a great bike. I am hanging out for the pics.
The oil question is confusing but I think it has a lot to do with what country you live in. In the owners manual it says Castrol 10W40 yet in Australia there is a sticker on the crankcase saying to use recommended oil Motul 10W60. For me in Australia I am using Motul 10W60.

Personally, I would hold off on any engine mods like the exhaust and tuner until its properly broken in, which at least on my '09 was 500 miles. Then go to town with upgrades. As far as the coolant goes, not sure what they're putting in the new ones these days, but mine was blue. The brand slips my mind but I looked into ordering some after my cross over hose blew out on the trail, and it was too hard to get, so I replaced it with Engine Ice. Oil was the same brand so for the first oil change I switched to Rottella Synthetic and have had no problems, plus you can buy it at just about any auto supply. If you do put the tuner on though, let me know how you like it. I'm looking to order one in the next couple of weeks. Also noticed that you put a 14 t front sprocket on. I ordered one for mine for riding on the street along with a new 49 for the rear for the trail, but had to leave for Kentucky at the last minute for work, and it came in a few days after I left. Just wondering what you thought of the difference between the 13 and 14??? I'm planning on running 14/47 for the street and 13/49 for the trail, but haven't been able to try either of them out. Post how every thing works if possible
Good Luck!

My 2012 and a few others on here have had the gas in oil too.... I think it has a bit to do with ring blow-by and the cheap oil they fill them with foams... I changed the factory oil about 95 mi also had oil in the airbox that leaked on the valve cover.... My second ride was filled with full synthetic 10-50 motorX and it leaked a bit in the airbox still, same oil on second ride it leaked some in the airbox but could have been a bit from last ride... Third ride did not leak at all.... I think the fuel in the oil also makes it foam a bit and after a couple changes and a few miles it seemed to have stopped.... I have only offroad single track miles and short opened up spurts after my first oil change but the bike doesn't seem to be building oil volume anymore... My 511 has about 250 miles now

I had oil in on my air filter only briefly when I bought the bike from new. I reduced the oil to just over the bottom of the sight glass as opposed to just over 3/4 full as it came from the factory, and all fixed. I have also found that the indicated 1.1 litres of oil for an oil and filter change in the owners manual is excessive and will overfill the crankcase again causing oil to spill over into the air box.

I use Motul 7100 10W60 for great gear change quality at operating temperature.

Keep a close eye on your oil. I'm having the same issue, and if you want you can scan though my thread I have running:

http://www.cafehusky.com/threads/2012-te511-fuel-leaking-into-gearbox.23398/

I already had the fuel injector replaced, but I still have a large amount of gas going into my gear box..and I can't see how it can be ring related..not at that volume. I'll be curious to see how it goes for you. I currenly have it completely uncorked and also run the JD Tuner on it. Also as a reference my bike now has 450 miles on it..that means that after my last oil change in which is was barely at the bottom of the sight glass...80 miles later, when on the kick stand, it's now almost at the top again...that is not normal in my opinion.

Pete, I can not imagine that much blow-by through the rings. Sounds more feasible to be leaking into the crankcase from the top somehow.
I have never experienced fuel in the oil on my bike so I can not offer anything to you as a guide.

Yep..now to figure out where and how. Since I had a new injector put in i'm stumped. The only way for gas to get in now as far as I can tell is through the throttle body, as I have taken the charcoal can off etc.
