  • Hi everyone,

As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Thanks for your patience and support!

OOPS! I spoke too soon. My fix is not 100%. After weeks of testing everyday I had an inadvertent reset today.

It needs more work. Maybe a larger capacitor. I'll let you know.

LOL. What a pain in the butt!

I hate electrical gremlins. You know the solution is a trailtech vapor right? Has its own backup battery, I think we could make everything work but the fuel light?

Never had these probs with more than 3k on the odometer other than flame outs, (race map 2). I did have a starter failure due to a displaced o-ring, I live in the desert, in a wet climate it may have manifested during the warranty. That was a $200. pisser offer. I just ordered a BMP gas cap, the stocker is warped and about the last item on my 2013 TE511 that pisses me off.
I like the bike quite a bit, it is an excellent all around dual sporty dirt bike, no racer though. I would buy another. But I firmly believe KTM saved Husky from being known only for lawn equipment and sewing machines. I do feel some empathy for the Italians that are being laid off though.
A local dealer who is overjoyed to jettison the Italian made stuff sold me an OEM air filter at 1/2 price, didn't have a gas cap though.

Hi again from the uk, been following with great interest, just about to order diodes etc then read still not fully sorted!! Just wondered if further testing was now being carried out. Plus bump thread e bit!? Cheers nigel

When it warms up a bit, I may do some testing on a full solution. The KTM speedo/odos had a dual power setup so they could run them on the pre-estart two strokes. The four storkes all came with a powered backlit speedo and the two strokes with a battery only job which lasted 5+ years of normal use.

If the husky version is dual powered, I think a smart solution is a very small 12v battery to power the speedo and power the backlight from bike DC. This SHOULD fix the issues forever. A little 12v battery could be added in and velcroed int he light assembly.

Mine did the exact same thing - on every compression induced fail to start, everything on the computer would reset except the full odo - clock, trips, etc.. Really a PITA.

Since I moved to set 3 I have not had a single flameout which means no hard starts so far - I believe ALL of my fail to starts came right after a flameout.

I fitted a Lithium ion battery with nearly another 100 cold cranking amps, never loose the tripmeter anymore after the stalls.

I opened up my tripmeter a few months ago & checked out the boards inside.
There is a circular depression in the housing like they were going to put a little circular CR type back-up battery in there, but didn't.
There's no contacts, but if you messed around long enough I reckon you could make it work.
I just went with the new Lithium bike battery & haven't looked back.

For what it is worth, I noticed that my trip meter resets every single time the engine gets 'compression lock' during starting. Right when it compression locks and makes a kind of electrical high pitched sound, the screen goes blank and resets. I wonder if it is some over voltage/overamperage thing, rather than an extreme discharge kind of thing.

This is what mine was doing, rather than 'over voltage' I believe the voltage dips too low when it is trying to crank.
My thoughts were to get a battery with more cranking amps, I fitted a 220cca SSB Lithium battery & the problem is gone

This is what I posted up on the 'World wide speedo failure' post

I have the exact same problem ALL the time. Just put in an EarthX battery the other day and my trip meter has reset 3 times already... It's kind of pissing me off at this point.

Just out of curiosity, what capacity are those Earthx batteries? We don't see them over here.
