  • Hi everyone,

As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Thanks for your patience and support!

TE 449 Tires

What tires are you guys putting on your TE 449's to replace the stock Karoos?

Brand/type?
DOT or not?
Stock size or smaller?

I ride in south Jersey pines so trails are firm with a soft surface and then we have the deep sugar sand. The Karoos didn't like the sand.

I am going to try Tubliss also so don't know if tire choice matters. Tire cost will matter so the lower the better.

DOT tires are not a necessity. We usually ride just a few miles on asphalt.

I searched forums and have seen Motoz(cost?), Kenda trackmaster and I think Michelin.

Any suggestions are greatly appreciated.

I ride in mostly SoCal mountains and desert which has a similar surface to what you described and currently use the Dunlops Ty used on the factory race bikes, MX71F90/100/Mx51 120 rear (non-dot). They have a pointed CRS and allow the 449 to turn sharper. They hold up even in the sharp rocks. Motoz Desert front and rear would be my DOT choice.

I've been real happy with Michelin M12 Intermediates. They aren't dot, but they hold up pretty well and work in a variety of terrains.

Motoz Desert front and rear would be my DOT choice.

After using them all (Motoz) I would go with...

Dez - IT front / HT rear
Mix - IT front / IT rear
Mud - ST or Terrapactor front / IT or ST rear
Deep mud, no rocks or MX - Terrapactor front and rear.

Hey Kelly, how would you compare the IT front with the desert (HT?)front? Asking because the IT front doesn't come in a 90/100...

I don't really have that type of terrain here but have ridden easter oregon / washington (Dez) and Moab and find the IT is a better all around and better on many surfaces. My experience only. The IT is one tough tire and wears well while working on a lot of stuff from hard pack to mub. It is an amazing long lasting do it all tire. I liked the HT front OK but it is not any better in the dry and way less versatile. IMHO.

S-12 in South Jersey.

You will need a snorkle to ride today!

Won't be riding for a few days here! Got our power back last night after a hurricane party so I can't complain.

Is S12 a soft terrain tire from Michelin?

I can't make S12 survive a ride. They are to lightweight for me and i tear them up. Many people love them but i find them flimsy and unreliable. I also think they have good traction for a few rides then go away fast. My opinion only. Much rather run a 401/402 or MX51, or M58 again just my opinion.
