  • Hi everyone,

As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Thanks for your patience and support!

te 449 chain tension issues

hi guys had my te 449 now 12 months or more, started to get bit of chain noise so checked chain and there seemed to be tight spot then slack spot ect replaced front sprocket and chain (supersprox fitted to rear) to find out not much better if i tension the chain on the stand to 5mm as per husky on tightest spot when i turn wheel to slack spot i have 10-12mm is this normall.i have checked wheel bearings ect even swapped rear sprocket but still the same.my theory is that as 13,14,15-51 ratio dont match you may allways have this happen where as say 13-52 is perfect but this is just a theory. If any one else could check there bikes just to put my mind at rest that would be much appreciated

It's comon to see the chain tighten then slack at different points.... Maybe mark your chain and sprocket with a pen then slowly turn wheel to see if chain tightens each revolution of the sprocket at given mark on sprocket..... Your Rear sprocket might not be balanced.....or bad quality control for bothe sprocket and chain..... I think its likely to be rear sprocket

Hey mate had the same issue when I purchased my TC 449, initially I thought it was just the standard chain stretching, so purchased a full set of chain and sprockets and replaced. DID X-RING, original front and RENTHAL rear. Anyway to cut the crap, once installed it was the same deal. Changed the rear sprocket again with a second sprocket thinking the sprocket was out of round, same deal again... Removed the wheel and had a machinist mate of mine clock the rear wheel hub with a dial indicator and found that the bolt holes in the wheel were out slightly. I can't remember how much now but is obviously enough to make a difference.... ( it wasnt much) The tight spot was always at the same spot when the wheel rotated fully, had nothing to do with the chain at all.....You/we as owners of the 449/511 era bikes with the cts drive system run a much tighter chain tension than normal, so any difference in tension is noticed straight away.....Couldn't see a fix with out replacing the wheel hub, so basically I have just lived with it and keep a close eye on the chain etc ( i run the tension set correctly to the tighter spot which means it runs looser than recomended at the rest) Have changed the rear chain guide to a much better one than the standard one also.... We spent quite a few hrs messing with it all mate and thats what we found, hope this helps

yep sounds right as i put steel rule on swing arm run the back wheel on the stand and just touches then doesnt, thought it was rear sprocket but after swapping it was same, poor machining if you ask me(what do you expect for such a cheap bike ha ha) wonder if warranty would cover a replacment ?How much effort do you put on chain to get your 5mm ? i did same and tensioned at tightest point cheers for input guys now i know its not only me,as for it happening on non cts bikes it wouldnt be issue on standard bike and you would probally never notice when you run 20-25mm of slack.

It's an issue on my Kaw Versys, I evidently adjusted my chain one time at the loose spot, went for a ride and heard this godawful alternating whoop-whoop sound, and yeah, the chain was getting REALLY tight in the other section of the loop and making terrible sounds as it looped to being too tight to just right. When I adjusted it for proper play at the tight sopt and just let it be too loose at the other half, it sounds OK now, so believe me, it's an issue on non-CTS bikes as well.

Maybe this is why people are reporting that the rear sprocket bolts come loose on ... Maybe the bolts are never really seated correctly in the sprocket holes ...

I'm not sure how precise the hub and sprockets are made, but I'd think it is not as precise as say some internal parts to the engine, so aligning and tightening the bolts on the sprocket is more critical than it really should be ...

Could be if the hub is out of round and the sprocket is true they are never going to perfectly line up. I like the way you think.

Ha! My alpinas on my bike do this too! Has the kite hubs, there is a just right spot, then tight spot. What I have done is ,ark the hub for the tight spot, and that's where I adjust the chain.

tried her out brand new front sprocket and did x ring chain.pretty much same as before really, must have been like this from new.Allso tried 13 front sprocket wich is great for real snotty trails and if you want to do 50mph at 4million rpm-think i may go back to 14
