  • Hi everyone,

As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Thanks for your patience and support!

TE 449/511 tuff question

Hello. My name is Bryan and I would totally appreciate your honesty here. Of all the forums and posts... Agghhhhh

Motosportz

is the only one I could find with some very core truths that I have been looking for. My concern is simple and I just need to hear it from the horses mouth, I am tentative to drop 10k on a bike that comes with mannnny mandatory upgrades or will not work for me.
So here goes:

With Motosportz's set-up Will I kill the motor of my future 511 by:
1) Putt'n through town
2) 12mi jaunts to work with good weather
3) General holligan riding
4) Motor vibration @50mph (come on really??) and if I had to jump on freeway can I?
5) Real maintenance schedule...? 90% of the time the bike will be lugging along looking bada@@! as I baby my bikes but require them to suck up the landing if I don't quite clear that road gap.:(

Real quick: Why? you ask: I really want to REAL Moto bike with a plate.
Bio: I am a moto track rat and do NOT do desert, raised on BMX, mnt. DH Freeride every week (YUP padded shuttle monkey!). Track bike sits due to time away from family/home...
I will mob my 511 up stairs and off loading docks, hit the MX track 3ish times a year and maybe same for fireroads as I live in SoCal I have NO trees to ride through thus you can see Motosports's set up is perfect for me.
I require the ability to hit the track, launch some double and can deal with Moto ergos as a trade off even though it doesnt make sense to anyone else! I am hoping this is the bike for me???

1) Not the bike's forte, but will do it fine
2) Should work perfect, especially with the Seat Concepts seat
3) Ummm....yes!
4) The thing will push triple digits with stock gearing. Vibration is minimal for a thumper
5) Change the oil regularly, air filters stay clean in some very harsh dusty conditions

Yes it will work fine on a track if the suspension is set up for it.

Exactly. I have done several 100 mile plus days and a few 200 plus mile days on this bike no problem dualsporting. Will cruz at 70 mph when geared up slightly with ease. Super fun hooligan bike. Mine loves to wheelie and i can rip huge 40-50 mph wheelies all day long. (not that i would ever do that)

quick vid for fun but mostly off road. I can do a vid street riding it for you if you like.

Let us know if you have more specific questions or concerns. Several of us on here have had these bikes for a while.

I'm in Socal also and never having a plated bike before didn't think I would be riding that much on the street. But since it's so much fun to rip some wheelies after work, I've definately spent more time riding around town then in the dirt so far. I needed the JD tuner and put a 46t on the rear for the short freeway burns to get out of town. I don't think my bike would have needed anything else.

Oregonsage ?? The guy's looking for honesty and (with all due respect to you, I really mean that) I have to say that with stock gearing
my 511 absolutely is maxed out at around 83 mph and (w/stock gearing) is not at all comfortable on freeways. A couple weeks ago I was up at our cabin
in Plumas County and had to do a 10mi stretch on Hwy 70 to get to Portola and I wasn't comfortable cruising 65 for more than a couple miles without
paranoia setting in. With stock gearing my advice would be to stay off the freeway. Hey, notice I've typed a whole paragraph without saying that dreaded
word.......CLOSE-RATIO...AAARRRRGGGGHHHH... I said it, oh well. You're probably wondering why the hell don't you just gear the bike a little taller for
those rare times when you'll need it ? The answer is simple... I LOVE MY 511 and it is perfect in every way for what I like to do the most which is trails.
I can deal with those rare times that I'd like to ride on the freeway without blowing it up because of what a joy it is to ride on stuff like this..

$10k? I bought my 2011 for under $7k with the Akro exhaust. I use mine for supermoto. I absolutely love it! Sucks for freeway duty tho. I got about 3200 miles on her. I rip it to work (12mi r/t) a few days a week and beat her up a few weekends a month. I change oil anywhere between 400-600 miles depending on riding conditions.

Have got the same question ... just the other way around: I don´t do tracks (too old) but need a lighter bike than my 630 for town and am toying with getting a 511. Am still a bit concerned about servicing intervals (top/complete overhaul) and having to do about 100kms a day on the motorway toget to work (average speed on the motorways here is about 150 km/h).

I'd stick with what you have. The 630 is much more capable on the motorways (assuming that's the same as freeways here) with longer service intervals for
oil changes etc... OR.... wait and see what the new 650 that's coming next year is like. Could be a very cool big-bore DS bike although it'll probably be heavier
than your 630.
,About the oil changes, I noticed in the workshop manual for the 449/511 I think it stated something like 1000 Km between oil changes... If that's the case then
I change my oil way more than I need to.

If you don't pin it to win it all the time, gear it for your use, then it could still be the mount for you. Those service intervals are based on hard race like use. They are still better then those pricey orange bikes though.

Thays my feeling as well. The close ratio trans is a little to close IMHO but I put a 46 on the rear of mine, can still do single track EZ (the gnarly stuff takes some clutch work) and can cruz 70 mph no problem. IMHO the 511 is way more fun than a 610 and i have owned and like both.

Suppose I might well be very happy with it ... if I banned myself from the Autobahn/motorway. The 630 is a genuinely good bike ... but the weight factor inhibits agile riding in heavy urban traffic. I sometimes feel as if I were on a Harley. I´ve still got my eye on the 511.

When I think highway I mean 55-60 mph (Oregon speed limit is 55) and our freeways are only 65...maybe 'push triple digits' was dramatic license :-)

I've had mine up around 120 and still had lots left, so triple digits no problem.
It seems the speedo is pretty optimistic, but must have been at least 105...
Of course, we go by kilometers per hour in this neck of the woods, so that's 65-70-ish mph for some of y'all.
