  • Hi everyone,

As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Thanks for your patience and support!

TE 310 Gearing

Hi All,
I am sitting around contemplating a gearing change for my 2012 TE310, currently I have a Stock set up 13/40, and a 13/50 set up. I like the 13/50 for the track and trail but when I go on vacation I like to camp in one spot and ride to the trails. The 13/50 has been a little sketchy on the road sections to my favorite trailheads. It is a 40mi trip to the trail heads, and 50mph seems to be about the comfortable limit as far as a constant speed. A couple of the roads are impossible to avoid and they are 65mph two lane highways. I was contemplating a 47, but looking at the gearing commander 46 looks even a little bit better for the road sections. The road sections are a necessity not something I enjoy. Has anyone tried this combination, and are you happy with the off road performance of it? I like to ride single track and the gnarlier the better. I have the TC mapping/12hole injector/JD tuner so power isn't a problem, but some of the stuff I ride is first gear slipping the heck out of the clutch kind of stuff with the 13/50 on it. Just not sure which way to go, and I don't want to end up with an extensive collection of Dirt Tricks sprockets.

I used a 13/50 set up this last summer. Next summer I think I'll go 13/52 with a 15 front as a gearing alternative for road travel... seems it's pretty easy to change out the front sprocket, the chain should be ok. This is on an '09 310.

I'm in the same boat. I have to travel sometimes 20-40 miles on road to get to most of my trails, depending which trails I go on. I'm on a TE 250 though. And the roads are 50 mph town highways. No 65 - but with my 'enduro setup' (btw - is that 13 or 12 up front?) - with 50 rear, I can comfortably cruise around 40-45.

But the trails I ride are moderate in difficulty, with deeper mud pockets and areas of lots of rocks / creek crossings. So the gearing for offroad is really necessary imo.

Maybe it's time for a 449 , looking at 2013 TE 310 R but that may be same problems.

For now, I'm going to try changing gearing as well so feedback would be greatly appreciated. I was thinking about 45 in rear and whatever is the 'enduro setup' for front (12?). Chain to use? hm

I hear you I was thinking about the 449 too, but I sold my 450 xcw because it was kind of a tank in the tight stuff, I wish I had that gear box on my 310 though.

I use a 47 on my '11 te310 and works good on the trails. If I had more roads and less hills I'd head towards a 46.

I ordered a 45t Ironman for mine last week... As little as I ride mine on pavment other than to connect trails or my 7 mile commute to work - I'm not too worried about comfortable cruise speed. I really do need a lower first offroad though than the 13/40 gives you.

About a year ago, there was rumor that Husqvarna might build a 5th, 6th gear set that was more of an over-drive as a retro-fit. Any one hear any more about this?

Please let me know how this works for you, I was thinking 45 might be a little too high? But maybe not, when I first got mine I rode it with the 40 but I was slipping the clutch a lot in the tight stuff. The 50 is great but it is just way too low on top to comfortably connect the trails on anything other than short jaunts, I did it that way most of the summer, but on 4 lane I was always afraid I was about to get run over. I wish they would put a taller 5th/6th, the bike would pull it no problem. I picked up a TXC Rear Fender/Number Plate/Hand Guard take offs from E-Bay this week, they fit perfectly other than having to make a small aluminum bracket to fit the number plate. I am going to ride it all winter this way. Most of my winter riding will be at the local MX/Enduro Track. One connector to disconnect the rear lights/Turn-signals, and one connecter plus turn signals, and the bike is converted from dual sport to moto bike in about 5 minutes. Love this bike, it handles the Moto track brilliantly, takes anything I can throw at it. I loved my orange bikes too but they were not as much fun on the MX track, this bike truly does it all. It is really close to a dedicated MX bike, just a little heavier and slower revving.

Might be a while

I was also fanning the clutch in tight stuff, and thought 2-3 teeth more out back would work...until I read that folks were going up to 50 or 52 teeth....12 teeth is huge! I think the 45 will be perfect.

@TrunkMonkey re: overdriven 5th and 6th. I think if they lowered first a bit it would be perfect, or wouldn't require such a drastic change in the rear sprocket to get you thru the technical stuff....maybe a couple teeth.
That little motor struggles to pull top gear as it is on any incline, I don't think a taller 5th and 6th would get you much more road speed. In fact, I think lower gearing will put the motor right in it's sweet spot and it should pull top gear much easier than it does.

Parts are arriving piecemeal - the Ironman 45 made it. The longer RK XSO chain is a day or two out.
I'm taking the suspension to a guy in Ft. Collins, doing a Seat Concepts again, have a 2.9 IMS going on, and a few other tidbits.
Picked up a filter and liter of Motorex, will check the valves while I've got it this accessible (only 440 miles on the bike though).
I need to figure out the quick disconnects on the fuel lines in the tank - so I don't get hamfisted and break something that probably needs a gently twist.
