  • Hi everyone,

As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Thanks for your patience and support!

TE 310 engine sound

Traveler

Husqvarna
AA Class
Hi everybody. I've received my dreamed enduro (2009) several days ago and I'm worried about the way how the engine works/sounds. I've been planing to buy Husky for almost 2 years and finally manage to do it (yeah), however I bought the bike from another country without having an occasion to check it before (I know..., sounds crazy). The bike is powered up, I was assured that was maintenanced properly and on time, it looks fantastic and ride like a dream BUT: the idle floats ap. 1950-2150rpm (no matter cold or warmed) and during my first (and only ride) the empty tank sign has showed up even if it was still half full. Need to say that bike hasn't been used for an year and there was still some gas in it, so I just filled it up with fresh (mix), good quality one. Maybe it might be the reason of this behavior? I mean some water which condensate in the tank simply mixed with a gas and I just need to use it?

The sound issue which bothers me is available in link bellow (I know file is big and sound not great but this is how my phone record it...). I have to admit that I do not have any experience with dirt or enduro bikes (yet) and can only refer the sound to my other bike. I know that these two engines are completely different. (different cylinder nb, weight, rpm's etc) but here is a lot of banging and other noises and simply do not work as smooth ad I'm used to...

http://we.tl/laZlLsX6H8 - will expired 30 may

Could anyone check the record and clarify my doubts? Is this how it suppose to work (his rough work characteristic) or there is something wrong with it and I need to go to the service, shouldn't use it any more and I was cheated? I've found some info about cam chain issues and more. What is your opinion?

Sounds about right to me. This will sound and ride way different than a v strom. A big thumper is not ultra smooth. I would check valves to ensure that the gap is correct. Then ride it. This thing will be silky smooth and perfect in its intended habitat.

Andrew

Thank you for your answer Andrew! For the moment I thought that there is no one here who knows how TE 310 should sound hehe... Most important that according to your experience there is probably nothing wrong with this engine and I can continue to ride it- mean to discover enduro world and Husky power!!

I will however, as you suggest, check valves gap. I already planed to change oil before next ride anyway so I was thinking to check the cam chain same time. I mean to disconnect Authomatic Cam Chain Tensioner and count those notches. I have to admit that this procedure is still not perfectly clear to me (not the pulling out part but reset itself and mounting it back). I will study old posts to figure it out...

BTW is there any specific seal under the cylinder cover I need to order before opening it or I should use only a proper silicon seal?

I seriously appreciate your effort mate, cause I tried to ask those basic several questions various "specialists" but no one even tried to help me without getting paid...

Cheers!
Marcin

So, I've found the ultimate help that will allow me to answer to most of my possible questions and doubts- which is official Workshop Manual (>100mb). Most of you guys probably know it... So now I'm much smarter and I finally got all the procedure with CCT. Great help by Rattletrap and ripriding (thanx!), altogether with manual allowed me to understand that I just should push its pin all way back (before reassemble the tensioner) and later mount a spring (when CCT is already screwed in). And this is what they call reset hehe.
About my other question now I know that there is a gasket under the cylinder cover. Looks solid on pictures, so first I will take a look at its condition (if it isn't to stiff and deformed) and than decide to order the new one.
Now I'm ready to start with my first inspection and maintenance.
P.S. I know that link to my video is expired now and will upload another one later, just in case if anyone would like to share with his opinion about my engine sound.

My 12 310 gas light also comes on and goes off with a full tank , no worries just carry some extra fuel if going on a long ride or find a clear tank , from what I have heard around this forum the last couple years is these husky s have some engine noise , good luck and congratulations on your new bike.

The 2009 310 has a different motor than the 2012 310s.

Traveler, that engine sounds great, and seems to run great too. Only thing I noticed is that the iddle is too high, you can turn the screw a couple of turns backward to adjust it. your bike has the athena cilinder.
About the gas light, can you check if the valve is on the OFF position? That could make the bike to use just one side of the tank, and then making the light to go on. Put the valve on the ON position to allow gas flowing both sides of the tank.

Thanks Alberto for your opinion! Another positive observation makes me much more calm about the deal I made. I already mentioned my lack of experience with this race type engines... Sems that this rough, tractor like sound is going to be my favorite melody from now then hehe.

I had to leave home for a few days and I won't have a chance to take a look at my bike till first week of June... So no update till then about valves gap and CCT. BTW I've noticed Athena cylinder and I'm still discovering which improvements were made by previous owner. Seems that he prepared this bike for real Hard Enduro challenges and then simply sold it - only 2300km mileage (!). I've heard that this Ibeat tool allows to check engine mhr. I need to read more about it. Maybe it is another "must have" I should invest in?

About the iddle: I had the same feeling and tried to adjust it in the first place. But floating I've described in the first post didn't allow me to do it properly (there was no reference point which could indicate what is an actuall idlle- turning adjuster just changed a range within it was floating). I still don't know why this had occured, hopefully it is this old gas issue I expect... Next rides in June will tell me more.

Gas reserve light: it's shame to admit but I didn't notice any valve there... Like I already said I'm far from bike now and cannot take a proper look, but was studying manual and still no clue. :/ Where should I search for it? Is it easy to reach or I should get under the tank? If it is not this mysterious petcock maybe there is a partially kinked feeder line from one side of tank to another. I will inspect this after return.
Cheers! M.

Update. First of all, excuse me guys for such a long brake, I had some personal issues that didn't allow me to continue this conv. Now I'm back home and back in the game riding this fantastic bike.
Inspections done:
1] CCT- still has plenty of free pins and cam chain itself looks like new, so no more worries about that!
2] Valves gap- one of intake valves has a gap slightly out of range (to loose) but because its the difference is really small and most of all it is not to tight- I left it like it was. I'll check it once again after this season and now just continue riding not to waste any more time to enjoy this bike.
3] Oil is changed- there was nothing suspicious in old one (no metallic or any other rests). No change in engine work ethic (still rides great).
4] Reserve light appears from time to time but mostly when I ride hard. I made a small track in the hills where I practice my MX skills (or trying to get any of those :) ) and there it likes to show up. I simply do not care any more, I always tank it full before riding and made a plan to take a look at fuel pump and filter after the season. Still no idea about which valve between 2 sides of the tank was Alberto talking about. I took tank off before valves inspection so I'm pretty sure that there is none.
5] Iddle: I adjust it like you suggest (lower)- bike still runs fine but floating still occurs. I don't know what is its reason but seems to me that it only change on the screen... I mean that I cannot hear any unusual change of rpm's. No clues about that. I met one guy who owned TE 250 and I'll ask him to take a look at this, maybe he will have any idea about that.
So far I decided to keep the bike and enjoy it as much as I can. Thanks once again for your help.
Cheers! Marcin

^There is no valve/petcock on the 2009, so you're correct.

If the reserve light is intermittent, it could be that the resistor leg has broken, but sometimes touches, so the light goes out. Mine initially behaved like that when it broke.

Thanks for your hint Andrew! I've fount your topic about that resistor in archive. There is also nice footage included. I will check it first during next few weeks. No rush for now- there is a loooong off-season in E Europe so I'll have plenty of time to take a closer look into that wires :) Plan for now- ride as much as possible. I really appreciate all the tips and responds, need to say that we have here a really friendly community of proud Husky owners. Cool.
