  • Hi everyone,

As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Thanks for your patience and support!

TE 310 2012 Clutch engages very late

Hello,
the clutch on my 310 doesnt engage until the very last part of the lever travel, is this normal? It also engages relatively quick, so not much room for clutch slipping. It doesn´t slip or anything, and the plates and the basked look perfect.
The only other thing i noticed is that the clutch slips when you ride the first few meters, but thats all. After that no problems apart from the above mentioned symptoms
Is there a way to fix this or do i have to live with it?
Moritz
Btw: sorry for my english, not my first language :D

We may be having a communication problem here, but if I understand your problem description: insure that the lever has at least some free play (>2mm)

The lever has more than enough freeplay, and is bled perfectly. On my previous 2 strokes you could manipulate the clutch much easyer, they weren't as "grabby", its quiet hard to explain.

Does it make a "groaning" noise when engaging?

Some of these clutch baskets have wobbly bushings on the basket.

I think Zip-ty sold a fix with replacement basket rubbers.

When the engine is cold and you take of for the first time it makes a relatively disgusting sound, but after a few meters its fine. Interesting, im going to check my basket for play. Could this cause my "grabby" clutch problem?

The "disgusting sound" is pretty typical and i believe may be directly related to the "grabby" problem.

I'd do as you say and check the basket for play.

The Basket definately has some play, not to much but its noticably. Would a Rekluse Basket fix my Problem? The ZipTy Kit is a bit inconvienient to get in Germany.

I'm not positive, but the '13-'14 rubber clutch dampers *may* have been updated from the earlier xlites. If a different part number exists- that would be strong evidence; if not, they still may have made a rubber-compound change.

You'll need new rivets, or bolts and a tap also IIRC.

I would guess a Rekluse basket would fix it, if your current basket has play.

whoops- never mind.

I just realized that the basket is probably sold as an assembly. (I just got back from a ride; i was thinking about this as i was slipping the clutch going up a steep hill- didn't want to downshift into second)

edit- I was wrong about being wrong. Part #8B0031378 $7.59 (6)
I just stumbled across the 2013 parts book.

BTW, what oil are you running in the motor?

Did you ever run auto oil with "moly" additives in it?

The oil makes a big difference in clutch feel.

Do you have a lot of kms on that bike?

No, Bike oil since the first hour. About 2100KM, a little over 1200 Miles, but hard riding. Disks look perfect. Tried 10w50 10w60 10w40 motul and 10w50 castrol, no difference.

Hey R_little

I have a 2010 TE250 with a heavily worn basket, and worn rubber inserts, that also has the "groaning" as you say when slipping it in the woods. I've replaced the clutch plates, as they were also pretty worn, but I was hoping you might be interested in selling a basket assembly to a Canadian?

I have the same grabby problem and "groaning" noise. I replaced the rubber bushings with the kit from Zip Ty, but it made no difference. My stock bushings looked fine when I pulled them out, 2013 TXC 310R. My fibers and steels all measure perfect. Always ran synthetic oil, all different kinds.
